Peacefully in the early morning hours of October 6, 2024, Edward Walter Holowich took his last breath.
Dad was predeceased by his loving wife Sylvia just 47 days earlier, on August 21, 2024, and his parents Joe in August 1971 and Annie in September 1972.
Dad will be missed by his children Michael, Paul and Christine (Ray Mackintosh), his granddaughter Annie (Anthony) Gill, great grandsons Easton and soon to be Theo (November 2024). He also leaves his sister-in-law Cecile (John) Paryniak, brother-in-law John (Marilyn) Boyachok, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and long time friends.
Dad was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 31, 1939 to Joe and Annie Holowich. He attended Margaret Scott, King Edward and Sisler Schools.
He was a member of Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Parish his whole life. He was in many different clubs in the church from the Men’s Club to the Seniors later on in life.
In the 1960s while Dad was a member of the parish Youth Club, he met Mom. She must have been his true love because after 57 years of being together and 47 days after she passed he took his last breath. The past four years have been extremely hard for them being apart, but now they are together again.
Dad began his career with Canada Post in Hamilton, Ontario. In 1964 he asked for a transfer back to Winnipeg because that was where Mom was and he wanted to be with his love. While working in Winnipeg he worked in many depots around the city.
After his retirement in 1995, Dad stayed home to help watch his little Annie. He soon realized how hard it was to keep up with a little one, so back to work he went. He worked for a few years as a driver for Acklands Grainger but realized working was more for the young and that is when his volunteering started.
Dad gave of his time to many different organizations and groups from volunteering with the Manitoba Marathon, Ted’s Literacy Run and many more. He ran the Bingo for the Rusalka Dance Ensemble and also helped at the Bingos for Melrose Community Club, the Men’s Club and the Knights of Columbus. For many summers Dad spent his time volunteering at the Folklorama Ukrainian Kyiv Pavilion where he started volunteering because his daughter and granddaughter asked him to join them. At the pavilion he worked with the security team for a few years until he was able to convince Mom to join him and work in the bar area. In 2002 Dad started what would be his biggest volunteer spot at the Health Sciences Centre. He worked in almost every department at HSC. In 2015 Dad was recognized for hours that totalled 17,612 to that date. While writing this I decided to reach out again to HSC and found out that Dad’s total hours up to February 2020 was 24,717 hours. Truly an amazing man!
Dad was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus St. Josephat Council #4138. He had numerous positions there while an active member. In 1985 Dad was part of the honour guard for the visit of Pope John Paul II to Winnipeg.
He was awarded many certificates for all of his volunteer time. You could always find him in the malls selling ICCD tickets.
I remember the day he found out he was on Ace Burpee’s Top 100 Most Fascinating People. His smile was so big! He just kept saying how Ace was his friend.
The family would like to thank River East Personal Care Home for their amazing care, love and support these last two and a half years. You all really made it feel like a home for him. Especially his friend Marie (HCA), the bond you had will never be forgotten. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
We would also like to thank Ed’s pallbearers Michael Paryniak, Jamie Alexiuk and Ray Mackintosh, and honourary pallbearer Darryl Chubak.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 10:00am at Blessed Virgin Mary Parish 965 Boyd Avenue Winnipeg with the rosary led by the Knights of Columbus prior to the service. Prayers will be Friday, October 18 at 7:00pm also at the church. Interment to follow at Holy Family Cemetery.
