Edna Gillott Obituary
“The time has come for me to reunite with the people I have loved and lost throughout my nearly 92 years. I have been blessed with a long and mostly healthy life, filled with good work, exciting adventures, great fun and much love. I have laughed, I have cried and I have tried to always do my best to respect people and sprinkle kindness around to others. I grew up on the family farm on what is now known as Little Creek Street. I was married to my husband (Bud) for 60 loving and loyal years, before he passed in 2014. Together we had 4 wonderful children who further enriched our family with their spouses. They delighted us with 8 grandchildren all of whom have grown into fine and productive humans. How lucky was I to also have 6 great grandchildren and many beautiful and talented nieces and nephews.
I have been so very lucky in my life to have many good friends with whom I have enjoyed camping, travelling, visiting, pot lucks, celebrations, card games, cocktails, phone calls and good times. My close group of friends, affectionately referred to as “The 6-Pack”, (Bud and me, Jim and Lois, Gerry and Sylvia) raised our families together often spending days at the beach, camping holidays, gathering for backyard BBQ’s, seeing in the New Year, playing euchre or dancing in the kitchen. We always had a lot of laughs.
I began my work career alongside Mr. Mayhew in his jewelry shop in Napanee as a young, single woman. After the children arrived I took a job as General Merchandise Manager at the Dominion Store in Napanee, then as a clerk in their Cobourg store.
I have enjoyed a lengthy and fulfilling retirement starting while we were still living in Oshawa then relocating to Harwood briefly and finally in 1995 when Bud retired, coming back to our cherished hometown of Napanee. In retirement I met a fabulous group of card players in Napanee and women that loved the game of 6-handed euchre. We gals (me, Carolyn, Ruth F., Dorothy, Eileen, Jo, Ruth C., Muriel, Nina and Dora) had a great time in each other’s company playing my favourite card game.
Bud and I enjoyed family visits and celebrations, working around our home and yard, getting to know our neighbours, picking apples and hickory nuts in the fall and strawberries and raspberries in the summer. I have followed the antics of the Young and the Restless for all of their 50 years on air, I have cheered for the Toronto Blue Jays for as long as I can remember and I have danced to every song ever sung by Charlie Pride. I have had a great life and I have lived it well.”
Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened. Everything remains exactly as it was. I am I, and you are you, and the old life that we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by the old familiar name. Speak of me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, and pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is absolute and unbroken continuity. What is this death but a negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval somewhere very near, just round the corner. All is well.
