It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected and sudden passing of our father, Edward John Gyurki at the Woodstock Hospital on September 25, 2023. Left to mourn this great loss are his children, Stephen (Christine) and Joanne, along with his beloved grandchildren Jonathan and Emily. Ed was predeceased by his loving wife Helen (2010), his brother John (1960) and his parents John and Anna.
Ed was born in Kitchener, Ontario on December 22, 1937. He grew up in Woodstock and was employed at the Oxford Regional Centre from 1959 to 1992. He began his career as a medical photographer and later worked in the area of staff training and development. He began studying classical violin at the age of 7 and went on to eventually become one of the founding members of the Woodstock Strings. His musical skills led him to begin playing Old Time fiddle. He entered the Canadian Open Fiddle Contest in Shelburne, Ontario in 1957 and went on to win in 1958, 1959, 1961, 1964, 1967, 1970 and 1974. Ed played as a guest on the Don Messer Show in Halifax, N.S., the Tommy Hunter Show and on Polka time each week on CKCO-TV with Walter Ostanek. Ed recorded three albums, one of which included all of his own compositions. In 1984 Ed was inducted into the North American Old Time Fiddler’s Hall of Fame, and was also invited to compete and later judge at the Grand Masters Fiddle Contest in Nashville. Ed’s musical interests included a wide range, especially his greatest passion, opera. He travelled many times to The Metropolitan Opera in New York, Vienna and to his ancestral Hungary to see his favorites. His other travels included 35 enjoyable winter trips to Mexico with Helen, as well as attending Polka festivals. Ed was also known to many as “Mr. Fix-it” and could repair or find a way to fix just about anything. Never one to sit still, he always enjoyed being outside, whether it be in his hammock, working in his vegetable garden, cooking traditional Hungarian dishes, winemaking, reading, and of course walking and jogging. These activities changed in 2016 when as a result of a fall, Ed suffered a devasting spinal cord injury that forever changed our lives. Though dependent on his power wheelchair, he never gave up believing that he would be able to walk again. Ed will be remembered for his strong, stubborn Hungarian side, and for the quiet but ever-present love he gave to his family.
Heartfelt appreciation goes out to Ed’s morning caregiver Denise Thompson with whom he shared a very special relationship and bond in his last years. Special thanks to Dr. George for his compassion and care, as well as the many nurses that cared for Ed and enjoyed him so much.
The family will welcome visitors on Friday, September 29, 2023 at the SMITH-LeROY FUNERAL HOME, 69 Wellington St. North, Woodstock (519-537-3611) from 7 pm – 8 pm and again on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1420 Devonshire Ave, Woodstock, from 10 am – 10:45 am. Funeral Mass will follow at 11 am. A celebration of life in the Parish Hall will follow the Mass.
As an expression of sympathy donations can be made to the Spinal Cord Injury Ontario, Holy Trinity Church or a Charity of Choice if you wish. Personal condolences may be sent at www.smithleroy.com
