Obituary
SWAINE, Earl George- 84, of North West Harbour passed away in Roseway Hospital on Thursday, August 8, 2024.
Earl was born to George “Raymond” Swaine (aka. Thomas R. Swaine) and Mildred Jeanette (Myrick) Swaine on March 19, 1940, in North East Harbour. He attended Verdun High School in Montreal from 1953 to 1955 and was in the middle of Grade 10 when the family moved back to NS. While at Verdun High, he entered an art contest where he drew a penciled picture and won a free art scholarship to McGill College, but because of the move back to NS he never took it. From the time he left school to about 1964-65, he worked with his father learning carpentry, cabinet making, and boat building. During that time, he also worked at Shelburne Industries, Ltd. as a foreman for all carpenter work done in the plant and on the ships or boats. Here he received a variety of training and experience, learning all aspects as to the mechanical and electrical work on ships, welding, and machine shop work where he took a course as a mechanist’s helper.
Earl married Rowena Perry of Ingomar on October 9, 1965, and they lived together in North West Harbour where they raised two daughters. He was self-employed building houses and doing general repair work until he received his mechanics certificate in 1969 and started working for Smith & Watt, Ltd. in Barrington Passage as a mechanic until 1978. From then until 1980, Earl was a foreman building boats at Bruce Atkinson Boat Builders, Ltd. in Clark’s Harbour, and then he and his brother opened their own boat shop, Swaine Enterprises Ltd. in Ingomar, which operated for ten years until 1990. Earl did some temporary boat building at other boat shops before fully retiring from the industry in 2004.
Besides his artistic, mechanical, and carpentry skills, Earl had many hobbies and interests over the years. His love of firearms was well known and as a self-taught gunsmith he made his own pistol, various knives, hand-loaded ammo, and would sight-in guns for others. He enjoyed hunting, target shooting, archery, photography, scuba diving, model building, drawing, and playing the guitar. He was interested in speed boats, cars, airplanes, hydraulics, electronics, practical engineering, science and sci-fi shows, business relations, human rights, and politics. He was a member of the Sou’ West Nova Metis Council and the NRA.
Earl is survived by his wife, Rowena Swaine; daughters Rhonda Wahlgren, Mount Vernon, WA and Shawna Blue (Jason Blue) Hardisty, AB; grandsons Connor and Dylan Blue, Hardisty; brother Ronald Swaine (Lillian Bower) Ingomar, and their children. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Mildred (Myrick) Swaine of North West Harbour.
Cremation took place under the direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Barrington Passage. There will be no service by request. The family would like to thank the North East Harbour Fire Dept.
