It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Duncan MacMillan MacVicar on Monday, March 13th, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
Duncan was born October 9th, 1935, in Louisbourg, NS, the only son of Edward and Elizabeth (MacPherson) MacVicar.
Duncan is survived by his loving wife, (Anna) Christine (MacDermid) MacVicar; children, Elizabeth Anne, Sharon (Richard) and Stanley (Kirsten); and sisters, Annie Tanner and Gloria Knickle. Bucca will be deeply missed by his grandchildren, David, Matthew, Isabelle, Stephanne Kaj and Braeden.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Margaret Wells, Georgina Cross, Joyce Trimm, Sheila Greer and eldest daughter, Isabel.
Duncan grew up in Louisbourg with his six loving sisters and learned the value of working hard and being committed to his family at a very young age. He worked on the wharf for the fishermen baiting troll with his friends. He started early and finished late, always known as the most reliable worker around. In 1953, he was waiting to be accepted into the RCMP when he was given the opportunity at the Sydney and Louisbourg Railway Company as a fireman. He quickly fell in love with the Railway, following in his family’s footsteps.
Duncan was an exceptionally intelligent man that worked hard to support his family. He could do anything he put his mind to. He truly was a “jack of all trades”. When the Sydney & Louisbourg Railway dissolved, he moved to a position at the DEVCO Railway. For many years, he drove coal trains around Cape Breton Island and his children would hear the whistle blowing and say “There’s Dad”. Duncan left DEVCO and spent a few years in a position at Sydney Steel where he worked in the coke ovens. However, the lure of the trains brought him back to DEVCO where he would work until his retirement in 1992.
His love story started in 1956 while visiting a friend in the City Hospital. He met a young nurse and their journey began…. The shy boy from Louisbourg mustered the courage, that same night, to ask “Chris” out to the movies and the stage was set to spend 64 years of marriage together. They enjoyed many date nights filled with friends, family and their shared love of dancing. His love and devotion to Mom was unfailing, their love timeless.
The courtship blossomed into love and Duncan and Chris were married in 1958. They settled in Sydney on George Street and soon welcomed their first child, Isabel. Duncan, with the help of many family members, built the MacVicar home and their family expanded, welcoming Bethanne, Sharon and Stanley.
Over the years, Dad and Mom thoroughly enjoyed traveling around Cape Breton Island visiting family and friends, from Wreck Cove to Louisbourg. They traveled extensively across Canada and the USA, but the highlight of their journeys was their visit to the Isle of North Uist where he discovered the origins of the MacVicar Clan.
Duncan was an active member in the United Protestant Church of Sydney River. He was a part of the Men’s Brotherhood, the Church Choir, and an Elder for many years. After retirement, Duncan and Chris volunteered with the “Meals on Wheels” program. If anyone needed help, without hesitation, he would be there… a friend or neighbor, anyone in need! To say he was selfless would be an understatement. He was a man of great faith and his love of God came through with his service to others.
Summers at the Cape were a time that Dad could relax and enjoy many adventures with his extended family. These days were filled with hunting, fishing, berry picking, weinie roasts on the beach, hikes on Kelly’s Mountain and endless family dinners on the bank of our summer home! Dad passed on his passion for fishing to his children and grandchildren. Their very best memories with their Bucca are with a rod in hand on the shore and in the boat at Cape Dauphin.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, 49 Welton St., on Friday, March 17th from 3-6 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the United Protestant Church of Sydney River, 1524 Kings Rd. on Saturday, March 18 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Cremation has occurred and interment will take place at a later date.
Donations can be made to the United Protestant Church of Sydney River or the New Campbellton Cemetery, a special place that Duncan volunteered to maintain for many years. New Campbellton Cemetery, Box 1345, New Campbellton Rd, New Campbellton, NS, B1X 1X2.
