DOUGLAS WILSON BARNETT
August 7th, 1945 – July 26th, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Douglas Wilson Barnett, in his 79th year, at home on July 26th, 2024.
Beloved husband of Margaret (nee Veitch); dear father of Ellen (Charles) and Erin; and proud Poppa of Leo, Gwyn and Catherine.
Predeceased by his parents Thomas and Christina, his sisters Lillian and Thomasine and in-laws, Jack and Jean Veitch.
Doug was born and raised in Scarborough. He attended Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute where he met the love of his life, Margaret, in 1963. His time at Winston Churchill was highlighted by his success on the football field playing defensive centre and winning the Supreme Cup, Scarborough Football Crown in 1963.
By profession and in spirit, Doug was a teacher. He started his career at Donwood Park Public School in Scarborough. He taught at Central Perth Elementary School (Sebringville) from 1971 to 1977 before joining Upper Thames Elementary School (Mitchell), until his retirement in 1998. As a teacher Doug coached sports, hosted Greek-style Olympics, and for many years coordinated an annual trip to Camp Menesetung which was highly anticipated by his grade six students. He went above and beyond to ensure an interesting and varied learning experience. Doug was an avid reader and nothing pleased him more than sharing the joy of reading with his students, spending many hours reading favourite stories aloud to them.
Doug and Margaret moved their family from Mitchell to Fullarton Township in 1978, where they farmed and showed what can be achieved through a dream and hard work. In his later years, he established and tended many gardens and trees around the property.
Doug was interested in the betterment of his community. In the early 80s his family’s interest in playing soccer in a town without a soccer program prompted him to unite with other key players to found Mitchell Minor Soccer. He remained involved with this organization for many years.
He had a curious mind and a very impressive memory for trivia. Great times were spent around the dining room table playing Trivial Pursuit. All of the other minds at the table combined were not sufficient to defeat him.
Doug was thrilled when anyone showed an interest in auto racing and would gladly share his vast knowledge. Sitting track-side at Mosport, his home away from home, was always his special place.
Music was an important part of his life and he appreciated most types, especially The Beatles. He performed in a folk group in his youth as the lead singer. He was a past member of the Seaforth Harmony Kings where his rich bass voice could be heard. He embraced his creativity by writing and directing humorous theatrical skits that were part of the Harmony Kings’ annual concerts.
Doug was a caring, authentic and generous man who was always willing to help his family, friends, students and community. He tried to be a positive influence, offering friendship and support. He had a great sense of humour and loved a good laugh. He was someone to rely on. He will be greatly missed.
Friends are invited to join in celebrating Doug’s life at the Lockhart Reception Centre, 116 Montreal St., Mitchell, on Sunday, August 25, 2024 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., with words of remembrance at 2:00 p.m. Donations in his name to the West Perth Public Library ( Click here to make donation to West Perth Library. ) or Tree Canada (www.treecanada.ca) would be appreciated through Lockhart Funeral Home.
