Dorothy Rosella Walking Hawk (McKay)
Dorothy passed away at Health Science Centre in Winnipeg, MB on September 23, 2023. She was 56 years old.
Dorothy was born on April 21, 1967 in Brandon, MB, raised on Rolling River First Nation in a home full of love and the youngest of numerous brothers and sisters. Following high school graduation she moved to Brandon, Manitoba and attended Assiniboine Community College to obtain her Early Childhood Certificate. She returned to Rolling River and made a home for herself and son, Jordan. Gaining employment at West Region Child and Family Services, Inc. as a prevention worker, she assisted her home community. She met the love of her life, late Lyle Walking Hawk of Mandaree, North Dakota and married him on April 22, 2000. Upon moving to Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, Dorothy was adopted into the Water Buster Clan, she was proud to be a member of this Clan. The couple welcomed Tracee and continued the pow wow trails as a family unit. While living by Newtown, North Dakota she worked at Four Bears Casino and Lodge, where she made many friends. Then working at the Manderee School. In between going to numerous war bonnets, pow-wows, sings, traveling back and forth across North America, in all wee-hours of the night. Dorothy moved back to Rolling River First Nation in 2015. Adapting back to cold weather and dark nights with the northern lights shining. Dorothy regained independence and as always continued to help others. She loved sewing, knitting and occasionally made clothing and even a blanket. She was elected board trustee of Rolling River School Division and participated as a West Region Child and Family Services, Inc. Rolling River First Nation committee member. She did a lot of work with Southquill Food Bank and Rolling River First Nation. She did not have favorites, she helped everyone. Dorothy was a person who would not sit still. She would go on wagon rides and became a known regular at outdoor quad events – she would even go whipping down a hill on a sled in the winter time. She was known by nieces and nephews on both sides of the border as a not so honest board game player.
Dorothy always tried to make things okay for us, she brought us together and was there for everyone. She was a rock by supporting others, even through all her own hurts. Always had a response on any comment someone said to her.
She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by family and friends!
Dorothy leaves behind to mourn her sons, Jordan (Erica) & Tracee Bennett
Siblings, Matt (Lillian), Cecelia, Linda, Madelene, Hilda (Arnold), Theresa, Roderick (Bonnie), Evangeline, Wilfred (Linda), Marcel (Mary Anne). Adopted sister Sherry Lonefight (Ted).
Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family, friends and Lucy.
Those waiting for her is her loving Husband, Lyle Walking Hawk, Mother, Dorothy (Amyotte) McKay, Father, Wilfred McKay, Brothers: Frederick, Clarence and Louis
Memorial Service at White’s Funeral Home, Minnedosa, MB
Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at 2:00 p.m.
Burial will be at Oakdale Coulee Cemetery, Mandaree, ND
Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.
