Dorothy Margaret Maki (nee Anderson) passed away peacefully on Friday, October 11 in her 87th year.
Beloved wife of Ted for 66 years, Dorothy was also the proud and loving mother of four daughters: Lisa (d. 2017; Lee Bilberry, d. 2017), Karen (Terry Humphreys), Sue and Jennifer.
Born March 14, 1938 in South Porcupine, Ontario, Dorothy was the daughter of Muriel and Clarence Anderson. She is survived by her siblings Jean (Harvey) Shepherd of Montreal, John (Mary) Anderson of Thornbury, and Marion Taalman (Cees, d.) of The Netherlands.
Dorothy will be especially missed by her dear cousin Betty Welch (Greg, d.) of North Bay, with whom she set out on the train from South Porcupine to Toronto to attend Toronto Western Hospital Nursing School in 1957.
Dorothy and Ted were high school sweethearts and married on September 27, 1958. They settled in Kitchener and as their family grew, Dorothy was a busy and devoted mother to their daughters, making sure they were well fed (she was an excellent cook!), well dressed (expertly sewing and knitting many of their clothes), and dedicated to the varied activities they were interested in. Mom’s chauffeuring service spanned from nursery school to many years of University of Guelph pick-ups, as well as making sure the kids got to skiing, skating, swimming, gymnastics, dance, and music lessons.
Dorothy’s involvement with the Kitchener Waterloo Gymnastics Club is particularly notable; she began as a volunteer in 1972 when Sue started gymnastics, and became the Club’s first Executive Director in 1986, a position she held until retiring in 2012. Dorothy was awarded the Ontario Volunteer Medal in recognition of her 30 years of service to the Club, highlighting her impact and commitment to the community.
Some of our fondest family memories are of summers spent at the cottage at Lake Eugenia. Dorothy and the girls would spend the entire summer there, with Ted coming up on weekends. It was a unique time of fun, freedom, creativity, and gatherings with family and friends. Sarasota, Florida was another special place for our family, beginning with March Break trips to Lido Beach, and later at their condo where we had so many happy Christmases and winter vacations.
Dorothy and Ted also enjoyed several years as Snowbirds.
Ted, Sue, Jennifer and Karen are immensely grateful to the staff at Sunnyside Home, Three Bridges Unit, for the loving, compassionate care they gave to Dorothy, and to our entire family over the past year. We could not have asked for a better support team to be at our side.
