Dorothy Loomer
November 19, 1942 – April 29, 2024

Dorothy was a devoted educator, beloved family member, and friend to many. She passed away peacefully on April 29, 2024, at the age of 81. Dorothy worked for over 30 years as a high school English teacher, mainly at Prince Andrew High School in Dartmouth, where she inspired countless students. Her passion for literature extended beyond teaching to her personal life, where she was an avid reader and an enthusiastic member of several book clubs. She was also a formidable Scrabble player, a game she both loved and excelled at.
Dorothy was a loving and devoted mother to her only child, Damon.
Her capacity to love extended through her first marriage to Philip Loomer, with whom she maintained a lifelong friendship, and was followed by a long and happy second marriage to Ray Cranston. She was deeply involved in the lives of Emily and Vanessa, Ray’s children from his previous relationship, from their teenage years onwards. Dorothy’s love for travel took her to many parts of the world, enriching her life with experiences and friendships around the globe. She treasured the weeks she spent most years with Damon and his family in Spain, and became proficient in Spanish. With her husband, Ray, she kept a friendly, open, and welcoming home in Waverley, where they hosted several foreign students and new arrivals to Canada, sometimes for extended periods. Her generosity and warmth were cherished by all who knew her. She loved nature and was an assiduous walker as long as her body would allow. She nurtured both a vegetable and a flower garden every year of her life. This deep-rooted passion connected her to the earth and expressed her desire to cultivate beauty and sustenance.
Dorothy leaves behind her husband, Ray; son, Damon; daughter-in-law, Nieves; grandsons, Daniel, Andres and Nico; sister and niece, Marilyn Higgins and Julie Bennington. Dorothy will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
She did not want a funeral service. A donation to the Nova Scotia Nature Trust or similar organization would be a wonderful way to honour her.
