Dorothy Irma Ryder passed away on April 16, 2023 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital at the age of 79. Dorothy was born on January 16,1944 to her parents Hayward and Clara (Barton) Brown at Newcastle Creek, N.B.
She is survived by her loving husband Wayne, her three daughters, Bonnie (John)], Sharon-Ann and Holly-Lee (Barry); 7 grandchildren, Laura (Nick), Rachel (Terry), Rebecca, Richard, Kayla (Randon), Felicia and Jaylyne (Chris); 9 great-grandchildren, Hayden, Hunter, Madison, Leo, Kiera, Claire, Olivia, Leander and Grayson; her sisters, Linda, Valerie, Darlene, and Della (Brian) and many extended family including nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law.
She was predeceased by her parents, brothers: Kenneth, Harold, and Melvin.
Dorothy or Dot, as she was known by her siblings had many interests over the course of her life. She worked in retail, as a practical nurse, a restaurant owner, mother and wife. She had a keen interest in Genealogy, researching and documenting much of her family history. A highlight for her, was when she was able publish a book of all of the material she had gathered. She was a lifetime member of the Women’s Institute, and worked on behalf of the NB Liberal party. She also enjoyed many artistic endeavors. Whether it was oil painting, decorating wedding cakes, making quilt tops, sewing, knitting or crocheting. She was likely best known for her love of baking. Taking orders for fruitcakes etc. For Christmas and continued to make and sell baked goods from her kitchen only a few weeks ago.
Her family knew her to be a detailed, and organized person, who imparted such lessons as “a job worth doing is worth doing well”. She was fiercely independent, despite having many physical limitations over the years. Her love for her family was always evident from the tin of home-made chocolates we all would receive at Christmas, to wanting us to sit on her knee when we were mothers and even grandmothers ourselves. This we left to the grandchildren and offered a hug instead.
She will be forever loved and missed by all. A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held at the Chipman Funeral Home Memorial Chapel on Friday, April 21, 2023 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Steven Ferris officiating. Family will receive comfort at the funeral home on Thursday, April 20, 2023 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. Interment will be made in the Cumberland Bay United Cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Cumberland Bay United Cemetery Fund.
