Donna grew up alongside her 3 siblings in Upper Rawdon,
NS. She helped in the General Store Barkhouse Mercantile
Imperial Oil Esso, operated by her father & mother.
Following her secondary education, she attended the Victoria General
School of Nursing, graduating in 1963 as a registered nurse. She
became a member of the Victorian Order of Nurses and worked at the
Victoria General Hospital from 1963 to 1966. On June 20,
1964, she married her lifelong soulmate Gordon Allison MacDougall. of
West Gore NS. Gordon and Donna would eventually move from Halifax, NS,
to Summerside, PE, in March of 1975. Gordon would take over the
Insurance Adjusting firm B.E. MacKay Adjusters LTD. They
would also jointly own and operate a tourism business, Cavendish Lodge
and Cottages, located in Cavendish, PE. Donna took on the Inn Keepers
role and the best part in her own words was, «Meeting the
People.» Many family members had the pleasure of working at the
cottages during the summer months.
In addition to being an astute business lady, Donna had many
other interests. She absolutely loved nature & animals of all
kinds, especially dogs. Her most beloved was
«Mindy» a Cairn Terrier, that was always by her
side. Donna never attended culinary school but if you ever
had the privilege of being a guest at her table, the meal was sure to
be delicious. Her love of cooking was always the first ingredient, her
specialty was desserts, and the annual Easter Cake was a masterpiece.
A green thumb runs in her family. House plants thrived in her care and
there was always a garden, big or small, not far from her reach. She
had a special connection with music and regardless of the activity
could always be heard humming or singing a tune. If one of her
favorites played, she would say, «Gord, crank that one up»
and she’d sing along. «Why Me Lord» by Kris
Kristofferson was at the top of that list. Donna was also a
life member of the Ladies of Harley and spent thousands of miles as
Gordon’s passenger. One of her most cherished motorcycle
trips was to Key West, Florida, with close friends Dave and Beryl
McLane & Jake and Janet Shaw. In 1982, she and Gordon built
their dream home in Stanley Bridge and her decorating talents along
with her flair for colors was evident throughout. Perhaps the best
part was all the life messages, poems and verses which always seemed
to be appropriately placed just at the right spot, to give the reader
something to pause and reflect on. For many years the family from NS
would visit «The Island», and those were some of the
happiest times for Donna. Having the house filled with family,
laughter, music, and good food made for lasting memories as these were
always special times.
Donna had a very strong belief in a higher power and a
greater good. She had an unwavering belief that we are all judged by
our actions. Being humble and kind were at her core. Her
work ethic was tireless, always with a smile, and singing a
tune. She was a mother and wife first, and all other things
second. There was never any doubt about that. If you were fortunate
enough to be in Donna’s care you were safe, loved, often
hugged, and protected. However, if and when you got «The
Look», followed by your full name including the middle one, it
was time to rethink your next move. She faced all of
life’s challenges with strength, courage, and
faith.
The one phrase that best summarizes Donna’s outlook
was «Live Well, Love Much, Laugh Often to stay young at
heart». She lived these words for the majority of her
life.
Donna will be treasured by all that had the pleasure of
knowing her. She would want and insist
those living to go on with a smile, a happy heart, and to visit those
still with us, especially her beloved Gordon.
So, the first hug you give him should be a big
«Donna Hug» and in loving memory of
her.
Special thank you to the doctors and nurses at the PCH, the
staff at Andrews and Dave Driscoll and his team at the Coach Program.
All very special people doing an outstanding job. The Family would
also like to say a special thank you to Rev. Rachel Campbell, Trinity
United Church, Summerside, for her prayers and support.
