Memorial Donation
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Joseph Briand which occurred at home on Sunday, February 5th, 2023. Born on November 13th, 1950, in L’Ardoise, Cape Breton, he was the son of the late Felix and Kathleen (Riley) Briand. Donnie grew up with 10 siblings in a small home near the coast. Donnie was a shy man with a kind heart. He would have given the shirt off his back to anyone without question. If you were lucky enough to get to know him, he left a lasting impression on your life.
Donnie worked construction in Halifax and Dartmouth until he was able to join the Longshoreman’s Union in 1983. He learned to operate pretty well all the equipment that was used at that time. He also operated ships, cranes, and according to his co-workers, he was one of the best operators. He was well liked by longshoring friends, many of whom he visited over the years after his retirement. He was a Union Brother for 31 years.
Donnie loved to go fishing and hunting in his spare time, spending many evenings in his retirement driving around looking for deer. He was a hard man to keep in one place. Sitting around was not something he enjoyed doing and if you saw Donnie at any point, it was usually on one of his many drives around the province.
In 2014 Donnie met the love of his life, Anne Marie. He took on the role of Step father and Grandpa/ Booker, titles he held proudly. He spent his final years in Antigonish with Anne Marie, enjoying retirement and spending lots of time with family and friends.
Donnie is survived by his partner Anne Marie, Son; Johnny (Gina), Step Sons; Brett, Calvin Step Daughters; Lindsey, Dayna (Andrew) and Julee Grandchildren; Allan, Hannah, Sophee, Summer, Carter and Theodore
Brothers; George (Gail), Phillip (Hazel), Xavier, Bernie (Lorna)
Sisters; Ann (Vince), Bernadette (Barry), Dianne (George), Denise (John), Wanda (Tony) and many nieces and nephews.
Donnie was predeceased by his parents Felix and Kathleen (Riley) Briand, maternal and paternal Grandparents, Brother Robert, Brothers in law; Dennis, Calvin Sisters in law; Cathy, Eileen Nephews; Jonathan and David.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral Mass will be held at the Holy Guardian Angels Catholic Parish Church in L’Ardoise on February 16th, 2023, at 11am. Reception to follow at the L’Ardoise Community Centre. Burial at the Holy Guardian Angels Church Cemetery at a later date.
