Obituary
With heavy hearts, we wish to share the sad news that Don passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, in the Haliburton Hospital. Don was born on Sept 15, 1934, in Edmonton Alberta. He married his wife Joan on December 1st, 1954, and they soon had three children – Sandy (Alex), Scott, & Cheryl.
They moved to Ontario from Alberta in the fall of 1969, and by 1971 had established themselves as cottagers on Redstone Lake in Haliburton. In 1988, after Don’s vision became impaired and he retired, Don & Joan moved to the village of Haliburton.
One of Don’s proudest accomplishments as a part of the Haliburton community was to be a key part of the founding of a community radio station in Haliburton. He helped to recruit the right people, rounded up the volunteers, and they made it happen. Founded by the community in 2001, and first on the air in 2003, Volunteer radio station Canoe FM 100.9 has very successfully served Haliburton for 20 years.
Don also spent many happy hours and years at the Haliburton Curling Club both as a curler, and as a trained volunteer bartender.
Don and Joan have been members of Haliburton’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch 129 for over 30 years, and they volunteered their services there when they were able.
Don loved Haliburton county, and spent many years at the cottage on East Bay, Redstone Lake fishing, swimming, skiing, snowmobiling, making maple syrup, and playing his keyboard for music on the weekends. At his home in the village, woodwork was his hobby and he produced many Muskoka chairs, designed and hand-painted for other folks, as well as toys for the grandchildren and lots of useful items for the kitchen.
Don spent many hours at his computer at home transferring music from old records onto CDs so we could listen to our favorite music when in the car. He met many new folks who wanted music ripped from record to CD – and became known as Mr. Rippit – or as “Don the Ripper”.
Loved and cherished forever by his wife Joan, daughter Cheryl (Vaughan Rowan), sons Sand (Kim Ireland) & Scott (Susan), sister-in-law Debora Cameron, grandchildren, Kate Cameron, Carolyn Cameron (Frank Gallo), Kristin Cameron (Drake Fenton), Ben & Nicole Rowan, Bianca & Colin Axenfeld, great-grandchildren Adelyn Rowan & Jensen Rowan. Loved by many nieces and nephews who will miss him greatly.
A Private Family Remembrance Gathering
A Private Family Remembrance Gathering will be held.
