It is with a mixture of profound sadness and gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of Don on Wednesday, June 7, 2023. He is survived by his loving wife Audrey Marian Nixon and his family with his first wife, Norma McDowell(1930-1974): Donna Lawrence, Patricia Openshaw, Carol(Mark Roffey), Lorraine(Douglas Stewart), Chris(Alice), thirteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He is fondly remembered by Darlene(Francois Pauze), stepdaughter from his second marriage to Beverley Reiter(1940-1993) and Audrey’s family: Shawn(Annik), Glen(Margaret), Kris(Laura) MacLeod and her six grandchildren. He leaves his brother Stephen Crawford but was predeceased by his brothers Trevor, Walter and their wives Frances, Denise as well as Stephen’s wife, Kitty and his granddaughter Jade Lawrence. Many nephews and nieces have fond memories of their uncle. Don was born on September 25, 1925 to Aubrey Reid Crawford and Fernande Pollonais in Port of Spain, Trinidad. He served in WWII as a wireless operator and air gunner. For most of his life he lived in Chateauguay and worked for Northern Telecom(Nortel). After 1991 he enjoyed his retirement in Alexandria, Ontario. Don loved to socialize and tell stories of his family and his many life adventures: growing up in the West Indies, the good times of the war years and his travels. He was a talented artist, he loved to tell jokes, sing, dance and act in plays. He enjoyed big band music and jazz, playing bridge, curling and golf. He always belonged to a Legion whether in Chateauguay or Alexandria and was proud of the freedom he had helped achieve. Audrey and his family wish to thank the staff at The Palace Long Term care, Glengarry Memorial Hospital, Dr. Lajoie, the PSW’s, Veteran’s Affairs and his friends for enhancing his life as his mobility decreased. Audrey appreciated the guidance of David MacDonald from Munro and Morris Funeral Home to work through his final wishes. A Celebration of his life will occur on Saturday, June 24 at the Curling Club in Alexandria from 1 until 4 pm. Stories and Memories shared at 2 pm. He will be interred at the National Field of Honor in Pointe Claire, Quebec. Donations may be made to the Field of Honor or the Palace Long Term Care Resident Council.
