Derek died peacefully at the Edmonton General Continuing Care facility with his wife, Mary, at his side. Although he had suffered from Parkinson’s Disease since 2017, his final illness lasted less than a day.
In 1988, Derek came to Canada as an Alberta Heritage Medical Scientist, initially having a joint position at the Edmonton General Hospital and the University of Alberta. At the Edmonton General Hospital, he continued the research into urodynamics which he had begun in 1970, when he was a Lecturer in Physics at the University of Exeter, UK. Derek’s theoretical understanding of pressure/flow studies led to an invitation to continue with theoretical and clinical research in the Biological and Medical Physics Department at Erasmus University, Rotterdam, the Netherlands, between 1977 and 1988. The final chapter in his long research career was in the Division of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, US, where he explored the connection between the brain and the bladder, first full time between 2000 and 2007, and then as a consultant until 2013. In 2015 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Continence Society. In addition to his research, Derek educated others through his many published papers and by giving workshops on the use of urodynamic equipment.
Derek was born in Mill Hill, London. His first degree in physics came from the University of Cambridge and he obtained his doctorate at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. He met his wife, Mary, at the University of Exeter, after completing a post-doc at Stanford University, California.
Although research was always the main focus of his life, Derek was also a keen gardener, creating three beautiful gardens in Exeter, Holland, and Edmonton. He was highly practical and artistic; this manifested in the work he carried out on each of the houses he lived in, but also in unexpected smaller ways, such as replacing and gold tooling the leather top on his desk and making a rug for the sitting room. He had a life-long interest in classical music, attending Edmonton Symphony concerts for over 30 years, and he greatly enjoyed hiking with Mary, especially exploring Alberta.
Derek is survived by his wife, Mary; brother, Larry; daughter, Jane; and son, David.
The family thanks the staff in Unit 12Y at the Edmonton General Continuing Care facility for their dedication, kindness and support.
A Celebration of Derek’s Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 9, 2024, at Connelly-McKinley Downtown Funeral Home, 10011 – 114 St, Edmonton, AB, T5K 1R5.
