Dennis Francis Dwyer, 81, of Marystown, passed peacefully away at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre on January 30th after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family.
Dennis was born in 1941 to Maria (Tucker) and Thomas Dwyer on Bell Island, the third of 14 children. As a young man, he moved to Labrador City where he met the love of his life Bernadette Coady and they married in St John’s on December 28, 1965. Shortly after, they moved to Marystown where they raised their family. Dennis embraced Marystown and the community welcomed him. Part of his life’s work was making a commitment and contribution to the community, particularly through the Kinsmen Service Club, Marystown Minor Hockey Association and Sacred Heart Catholic Church among other volunteer and community organizations. Dennis worked at the Marystown Shipyard and after retirement continued to work at his own company, The Hydraulic Place.
Dennis loved to host family and friends and treating them to his legendary cooking and hospitality brought joy to his heart. Along with Bernadette and the children, they made many memories travelling on summer holidays to special locations, attending family gatherings, visiting their friends, and going on many camping excursions. He continued to explore his love of travelling with Bernadette visiting their children and grandchildren long after retirement.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bernadette, children John, Judith (Mark Hurley) and Jeff; daughter-in-law Jennifer Dwyer; grandchildren Jonah, Elijah & Malachy Hurley; Isaiah & Parker Dwyer and Aiden & Liam Dwyer; brothers and sisters, Mary Norman, Ada Fitzgerald, Ruth (Roy) Bennett, Carmel (Peter) Allan, Brian (Nola) Dwyer, Calvin (Cheryl) Dwyer, Audrey (Dave) Hurley, Don (Debbie) Dwyer, Kathy Kelloway, Carol (Philip) O’Keefe; brothers & sisters in law Trish Dwyer, Betty Coady, Patricia (Roland) Riggs, Joan Mayo, Evelyn (Gerry) Brown, Lorraine (Gary) Taylor, Wallace (Ann) Coady, MaryAnn (Ron) Broderick and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Dennis was predeceased by his youngest son Jerry, brother-in-law Allan Coady, parents Maria & Thomas Dwyer, siblings Bill, Bernice & Henry Dwyer, parents-in-law John & Christina Coady, brother and sister in-law Gordon and Sheila Coady, brothers-in-law John Coady Jr, Bill Mayo, Tom Norman & Paddy Fitzgerald.
Our family would like to thank the staff of the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre and Fr Emmanuel Quagraine for their care and compassion in navigating Dennis’ final days.
