In Loving Memory of Dave Harkness
Passed peacefully at home in Minden, as he wished – sitting in his chair and watching sports on TV.
He started his chapter in Toronto April 19, 1941. When he was 10, he ran away from home with his violin. Dave, as a teenager played lacrosse travelling all over Ontario to compete. One of many funny stories – Dave is not a cook, living on his own he called his grandmother, he was having trouble stuffing a chicken – her advice “you’re stuffing from the wrong end”.
He started working at Coca Cola in 1965 – Known as “Gramps” by all, he made many golf buddies, they would spend most Aprils in Myrtle Beach golfing, and using Dave’s daily pill box to determine what day it was. Then Labour Day weekends in Wasaga Beach, over 100 couples, golf, drinks, poker and great food. Friends came north to Minden for BBQ’s, golf tournaments and we even had a wedding in the back yard.
Dave married Joan (Millard O’Donnell) in 1988, and became a stepfather to Robert O’Donnell, Kim Forster (Tim) and Dwayne Harkness – and the family grew. Grandchildren Brian (Dainna), Joey (Kymberly), Kiaya (Adrien) and Brittany, still growing Great Grandchildren Chase, Ella, Leslie Grace and Elizabeth Anne.
Dave is predeceased by his parents Pearl and Doug Harkness, a fire chief in Toronto, and a brother Donald who was also a fireman in Toronto. He is survived by his “Bud” brother Bobby (Shawn), Doug (Gwen), Paul and Ron (the late Dixie).
Dave closed his chapter on February 29, 2024 in his 83rd year, he is now with our pet family Misty, Max and Shemo along with many of his golfing buddies.
While we are waiting to end our own chapters, remember Dave as the kind, generous and good-hearted person he was.
Dave will be laid to final rest when I end my chapter at York Cemetery, Toronto.
