Obituary
The family of David Reginald Jamer wishes to announce his passing which occurred on Saturday February 4, 2023 at Kingsway Care Centre. Our loss is real but so is our joy at his peaceful heavenly homecoming.
David was born in Andover, NB on July 26, 1934 to the late W. Barrett and Myrtle (Jenkins) Jamer.
He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Dora (Toner) Jamer; his son Gerald (Carol) Jamer; daughter Rhonda (David) Peterson; sisters Mary Doughty and Deanna Clark; grandchildren Sarah (David) Parsons, Rebecca (Kyle) Perrott, Shiloh Peterson, Joshua (Deja) Peterson, Micah (Katie) Peterson and Benjamin (Johanie) Peterson; 20 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, David was predeceased by his brothers John, Richard, Douglas and Winston; brothers-in-law Harry and Kenneth; sisters-in-law Katherine, Jane and Jean.
Growing up on a 200 acre family farm in the middle of Andover, David was introduced to the value of hard work and gained early construction experience helping his father build sidewalks in the town. Rumour has it that romance blossomed early in his father’s potato field during harvest when a beauty from Beaconsfield, Dora Toner, caught his eye and stole his heart. Married on January 7, 1952, they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary this year.
A summer job with Richard and B. A. Ryan Construction while building a new high school in Andover led to a move to Montreal in 1954. This was followed by a return to Saint John in 1960 where David worked as a construction estimator for Richard and B. A. Ryan for several years. In the late 1960s David, with the help of some partners, formed Security Plumbing and Heating, which would become Security Mechanical Ltd. A well respected entrepreneur and businessman, David provided leadership for this company until 1983.
After sensing a “call” to Christian service while working as a counsellor at a Leighton Ford Crusade in 1964, David and Dora began a lifetime of involvement and leadership in a number of churches. This included street outreach to at risk youth through coffee-house ministry, serving with the Gideons, overseeing Crossroads Youth Center, serving on the executive of the Greater Saint John Ministerial and then in 1978 purchasing a 60 acre farm on the French Village Road and establishing Dayspring Ministries. In 1985, David became pastor of the Saint John Alliance Church, a role he continued in until retirement. He was fully ordained with the Christian Missionary Alliance denomination in 1991 at the age of 57,
After suffering four strokes later in life, the Kings Way Care Center has been Dave’s home for the past four and a half years. Well loved and cared for there by staff, he will be remembered for his laughter, his constant smile and for never complaining!
Not just “Dad” to Jerry and Rhonda or “Gramp” to his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Dave was a spiritual “father” to several generations of those he parented in the faith, to whom he and Dora opened their hearts and their home and in whom he invested his love, acceptance, wisdom and counsel. Our family has been literally overwhelmed by expressions of love and appreciation, with so many of them including specific memories of how Dave and Dora influenced and shaped their lives. Not just someone who “talked the talk”, David Jamer was someone who “walked the walk”. He was a shining example of what the “gospel” can and should look like. Thank you for remembering him with us.
Resting at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) where visitation will be held on Saturday February 11, 2023 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held in Fundy Funeral Home Chapel on Monday February 13 at 11 a.m. Interment will be held in Smithtown Baptist Cemetery in the spring.
