David Bryan Osmond Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of David Bryan Osmond, 61, of Mount Pearl, announces his death on November 14, 2024, succumbing to glioblastoma, a brain cancer. In Dave’s final hours, he was surrounded by loved ones, and passed away at the Dr. Leonard A. Miller Palliative Care Centre in St John’s.
Dave was born to David and Julie Osmond (nee Marsh) at Grand Falls, on Feb 6, 1963, and graduated from GFA in 1980. During his early life, Dave discovered he had a talent for track and field as a runner and dedicated many years to the sport as an athlete and later as a coach. He enjoyed working out regularly, and his lifelong pursuit of fitness helped him manage his physical and mental health. Dave was an avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and although they only won the Stanley Cup once in his lifetime, in 1967, he proudly wore his Maple Leafs jersey and kept hope alive that he would see them win that elusive Stanley Cup once again.
Dave was easily recognized by his glorious bald head, carefully manicured goatee, bright blue eyes, and cheezy smile. He was full of heart, had a quirky sense of humour, and loved being around people who accepted him for the man he was. His lack of ego and generous spirit made him a very easy person to be around. Dave enjoyed camping and golfing, had a lifelong love of playing cribbage, and, besides hockey, enjoyed watching Formula One races.
Nothing was more precious to Dave than spending time with his only child, Devon. They enjoyed golfing, working out, and sharing stories over breakfast at Smitty’s. Although Dave had just gone through surgery this summer, he put all his energy into getting well enough to attend Devon and Amy’s wedding, which he was able to do.
Dave worked for many years at Sears selling appliances, but later found a career he absolutely loved at Eastern Health as a Storekeeper. Due to Dave’s strong work ethic and positive attitude, he was valued by his colleagues and greatly enjoyed being part of a dynamic team. Dave’s family would like to thank his many coworkers at Eastern Health who took the time to visit him during his illness, bringing treats, smiles, and funny stories to brighten his last days.
He leaves to mourn his loving and dedicated partner, Rhonda Hillier; beloved son, Devon Osmond (Amy) of St John’s; stepson Aaron Hiscock; his father, David Osmond (Eileen) of King’s Point; sister, Dana Osmond (Darlene) of Shelburne, NS; brother, Glenn Osmond (Janet), of Eastern Passage, NS; sister, and Lori Osmond, of Cloverdale, B.C. He is also survived by his uncle, Lloyd Osmond (Jeanette) of St John’s, Clive Osmond (Clara) of South Branch, and his special aunt, June (nee Osmond) Walters (Hazen) who took on the role of surrogate mother for Dave and Dana during their youth. Dave had a close connection to many special cousins, including Debbie Osmond, Heather MacKay, Janice Walters, and Jim Osmond, who have all made Dave’s life so much richer by sharing fun, music, and many happy family gatherings. During the last months of Dave’s life, his sister, Dana was able to take time to be in St John’s with Dave, and Dave was happy they could share many meaningful moments together filled with laughter, road trips, onion rings, trail walks and good talks, enjoying the bond of love they have always had, despite living in different provinces.
David leaves the love of his life, Rhonda Hillier (Aaron Hiscock), who, for the last five years, has added many happy days filled with love, camping and hiking adventures, boil-ups in the woods, and excellent homemade lemon pie to the richness of Dave’s life. Despite Rhonda being a Habs fan, Dave and Rhonda found a connection that was very special. Rhonda was by Dave’s side day and night throughout his illness, her love and support for Dave was beyond measure. Her family fell in love with Dave as well, and Rhonda’s mother, Orpha Welsh, treated Dave like a son. In addition, Rhonda’s brother, Glenn Welsh (Kim), and sister, Paula Webster (Mike), offered much kindness and support to Dave throughout his life and during his illness.
David was predeceased by his first cousins, Chris Walters, of Gander, Michael Osmond of Ottawa, aunt Elaine Smith of Cache Bay, Ontario, and grandparents, James and Sarah (nee Mercer) Osmond, of St John’s. Dave was also predeceased by his beloved grandmother, Ann (nee Bennett) Marsh and grandfather, Clement Marsh, of Grand Falls, who raised him.
David’s family would like to express their appreciation for the staff and volunteers of the Palliative Care Unit at the Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre, the ICU and 5SB Neurosurgery at the Health Sciences, and the employees of Comfort Home Care.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 18, 2024 from 2:00pm-4:00pm and 7:00pm-9:00pm at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 73 Commonwealth Avenue, Mount Pearl. Funeral service will take place from Barrett’s Mount Pearl Chapel on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 at 2:00pm. Interment will be held in Grand Falls- Windsor on Wednesday November 20.
