David Alfred Duval (“Dave”) 1955 – 2024
David “the Old Man” Duval, a proud «old-school» miner turned passionate workplace safety advocate, passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 29, 2024, at the age of 69. Dave grew up in Sudbury, Ontario, and built a successful life for himself and his family through hard work and determination.
Dave’s early years were shaped by a challenging upbringing, but he rose above those challenges to become a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He started his career underground, working as a shaft sinker and diamond driller in mines across Sudbury, Elliot Lake, and Thompson, Manitoba, earning his Class A miner designation— the highest level for underground miners in Canada. His career eventually led him to safety consulting, where he founded Industrial Solutions Management (ISM Inc.) in Sudbury. His company played a vital role in helping industries like mining and transportation comply with safety regulations in relation to confined space and fall protection. Dave’s success with ISM Inc. throughout Canada led to the expansion of ISM USA, with its head office in his home away from home, Green Bay, Wisconsin. His business ties and friendships there developed into his American family, where a piece of his heart will always reside. He was fortunate to attend many game days at Lambeau Field, cheering on his Packers as a number one fan and one of the first Canadian shareholders. Dave’s dedication to health and safety leaves a lasting legacy.
Beyond his professional life, Dave was deeply committed to his family. He is survived by his wife Karen (née Ristimaki), who was not only his partner but also his best friend. Their bond was an inspiration to all who knew them. Dave loved spending time with Karen’s extended Ristimaki family, a source of joy for him throughout the years.
Dave leaves behind his children whom he loved very much: his son David Jr. (wife Anna), and daughters Cara (husband Glenn) and Rebecca (a.k.a., Becky). Rebecca and her former husband Randy share two wonderful children, Nolan and Aleigh, who were among Dave’s most cherished grandchildren. In addition to them, Dave was the proud grandfather of Henry, Jackie, June, Fiona, and Felicity. “Sampa” treasured every moment he spent with them, often taking them for quad rides or watching them play sports. He was a fixture behind the glass at many a hockey rink. He would jokingly tell his grandkids he would “wet their lips and stick them to the wall” if they misbehaved—a humorous family memory that will live on.
Dave’s mother, Norma Rogers, age 99, survives him, along with his sister Patricia Mayer (husband Pete). His father, Rudolph Duval, predeceased him. Over the years, despite the many changes in his life, his mother and sister were constants. The family always gathered for Christmas and other holidays, and he appreciated the love and adoration he received from both of them.
Throughout his life, Dave had countless friends, but a few remained especially close, and his passing has left them deeply saddened. While too many to mention by name, they will remember Dave’s friendship and the good times they shared.
Dave had a lifelong passion for sports, and he was always involved in some kind of sports pool. His garages were filled with sports memorabilia, reflecting his enthusiasm for Team Canada, the Leafs, and the Packers. He also enjoyed the rare distinction of having gotten a hole in one in golf and a perfect hand in crib! He was quite the gamesman. In addition to his love for sports and games, Dave was known for his enthusiasm in telling old mining stories to anyone who would listen. He took pride in sharing his experiences from a lifetime underground, and his storytelling was a cherished aspect of his personality. Whether it was through his street smarts or wisdom gained from a lifetime of trial and error, Dave was a decisive man who was the go-to person for advice. No matter the situation, he always found a solution, relying on his instincts and experience. His children admired him for the valuable life lessons he taught, often encouraging them with sayings like «don’t take any wooden nickels.»
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the Northeast Cancer Centre and the Bayshore Home Health Palliative Care Team for their compassionate care during Dave’s battle with cancer.
A celebration of life will be held on October 19, 2024, from 1-5pm at the Lively Golf & Country Club. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Northern Cancer Foundation.
Dave’s impact on workplace safety and the love and wisdom he shared with his family and friends will never be forgotten. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Rest in peace, Dave.
