Daniel Schmidt, 88, of Waldheim, Saskatchewan, passed away unexpectedly on April 24, 2023. He passed away at the Saskatoon RUH due to health complications.
Dan was born on April 20, 1935, at Shell Lake, SK, to Henry and Maria Schmidt. He was the second youngest of 11 children: Cornelius (Neil) Schmidt, Jack Schmidt, George Schmidt, Edward Schmidt, Harry Schmidt, Ulwinna Hinz, Arnold Schmidt, Olga Litkeman, Simon Schmidt, and Netta Gerbrandt.
In 1964, on December 12th, Dan married his beautiful bride Hilda Wiebe in Saskatoon, SK., and they went on to have 5 children: Ira (Kari) Schmidt, Iris (Brad) Randall, Carla Goertzen, Helinda Epp, and Patricia Zacharias. He had 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Dan looked after his family by working on the oil rigs. Later, he worked for multiple drilling companies learning various jobs, such as drilling soil samples, putting in piles, and water well drilling. In the early 1980’s he went out on his own. Dan worked alongside his wife, Hilda, and with the help of their son, Ira, they drilled water wells in the community & area for many decades. In 2014, at the age of 79, Dan retired from the water well drilling business.
Dan had several hobbies including music and nature. He loved old country western music. He excelled at playing the guitar and singing. He was known to have an incredible memory, remembering songs, artists, and lyrics. One of his favorite songs was ‘Here in the real world’ by Alan Jackson. Dan was known to be an outdoorsman. He liked nature, and trees and could find the simple beauty in rocks. Dan also loved watching NHL hockey. He was very passionate about studying his family history. He journaled every day in a notebook – noting the weather and what he did that day.
Dan will be missed.
