Conrad William Hnatiuk, late of Regina, SK, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2024 at the age of 80. Con is survived by his wife, Cheryl, who were soon to celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary, his daughter Andrea Hnatiuk(Darcy Smycniuk) with whom he shared his lifelong love of learning and travelling; and his two sons, Michael Hnatiuk and David (Tina) Hnatiuk with whom he shared his love for sports and the outdoors. He was a very proud Poppy of Alexandra Hnatiuk (Evan Biberdorf) and Magnus Hnatiuk and could never wait long enough to hear how they were doing and be provided almost daily updates on their adventures and accomplishments. Con would beam with joy upon the slightest thought of his grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Ronald (Gail) Hnatiuk; and will be missed by his sister-in-law, Darlene (Reg) Matheson; his nieces and nephews, extended family, cousins, and the numerous people he impacted throughout his career.
Con loved to travel, especially to Europe, where history and beauty are in abundance. But, to be honest, his favourite place of all to travel was to Good Spirit Lake where he would spend countless hours outside, and more importantly, fishing for hours with his lifelong friends. There were a lot of fishing stories! When not fishing, he was known to follow a couple of his favorite sports teams – Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Having been born into a family of farmers and growing up in rural Saskatchewan (Insinger, Yorkton), Con knew and exemplified what dedication and hard work really meant. He took these life lessons with him throughout his career. He began his professional life teaching school then soon drew his attention to social work. He was a dedicated public servant in Saskatchewan for the majority of his career. Beginning as a social worker in Yorkton and quickly being acknowledged as a strong leader and change-maker, he took on a multitude of leadership roles that advanced him through the provincial public service system and eventually served proudly as Deputy Minister in the ministries of Social Services and Health until 1999. His passion for making change also impacted the provinces of Alberta (Family and Social Services) and Manitoba (Community Services and Corrections) where he continued to serve in senior leadership roles in the human service ministries. Through these leadership roles he led the transformation of social systems, policies and programs. Throughout his career he chaired boards, led labour negotiations, established governance and delivery structures, participated in numerous provincial and national policy initiatives, led major reforms in the fields of income security and child welfare programs and policies, worked with all levels of government, numerous research, advocacy and advisory organizations and community groups.
After leaving a distinguished career in public service he never really retired as he felt there was still so much he knew he could influence and impact due to his expansive experience in public administration, in-depth knowledge, valuable insights, mentorship, and leadership. He provided consulting services to numerous organizations and boards and continued with these endeavors until his passing.
He was known to his friends and colleagues to provide advice and offer opinions, both solicited and unsolicited, during formal meetings and lengthy lunches or over coffee. Although his career and professional experience is expansive and impactful, he will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, Poppy and friend!
In keeping with Conrad’s wishes a Private Gathering will take place at a later date.
