Clement Drover passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 19, 2023, at 85 years old. Clem was born and raised in Upper Island Cove where he enjoyed simple pleasures and responsibilities of outport Newfoundland life.
He was a kind, gentle young man who had a lot of fun and innocent mischief. He always enjoyed school and in 1957, Clem received a scholarship to study Mathematics and Education at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Around this time, he met the love of his life, Eileen Parsons, at Bussey’s Snack Bar in Bay Roberts. They were married for 62 years.
After convocation, Clem taught in a few places before settling into Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts where he was Math Department Head & established ‘Night School’ (adult education). He enjoyed teaching but always had an entrepreneurial spirit. He had endless energy and established many businesses on the side- an RV lot, a day care, and a printing business. After 30 years, he retired from the classroom but continued his passion for teaching by establishing a Driver’s Education School. Clem was always proud to give folks the skills and confidence they needed to be successful in their lives. Giving praise was second nature to him. For as long as he was able, he would tell cashiers, nurses, tellers, and everyone he encountered “you’re doing a great job.”
He belonged to the Loyal Orange Lodge, Masonic Lodge and Mazol Shriners, had a penchant for politics and served his community on committees and boards.
More than anything else, Clem was a family man who loved to teach, inspire, guide, and stand by his wife and children. His greatest pride was his three children and nine grandchildren. He loved his grandkids with the same gentleness, patience, and attention he showed to his own children – singing songs, combing hair, telling stories, reading books, and sharing the simple pleasures of life & the outdoors. He had a way of making everyone feel special. He was a safe place to share your greatest worries and troubles and always had the perfect words to console and guide. He had an incredible way of helping you find the answers within and never tried to impose his opinion. Clem was the rock of the family ready to help, support, uplift, and love unconditionally. He seemed unshakable. His shoes are impossible to fill.
Clem had, and lived, a good life. He racked up loads of good memories camping with the family, playing 120s with a large group of friends, and going to dances with Eileen. He enjoyed eating, singing, dancing, and music; working outdoors & being ‘out in the garage’; a boiling hot cup of instant coffee and soft serve ice cream; button-down collared shirts with a pen and notebook in the chest pocket; his cowboy hat, bolo ties, and old-west cowboy culture; and being ‘up in the country’ in the cabin he built at Ocean Pond in 1992.
In 1999, Clem wrote a few words of advice: “Relax once in a while. Be yourself. Keep some little time to dream- seems like dreaming only makes sense when you’re young. Avoid anger-it hurts you more than it hurts the cause of your anger. Stay connected to your siblings. Teach your children well.” Clem’s legacy is love, kindness, and great lessons. The world is a better place because he was in it.
