Clarita Dunn passed into eternal life on January 12, 2023 after a lengthy battle with Dementia. Clarita was born on December 11, 1929 to parents Maria Eres and father Pilajio Rubica of the Philippines. Born in Silay City in the Philippines, Clarita was 16 years old when the Japanese Insurgency invaded the Philippines during WWII. After which she always had the ambition of becoming a nurse and moving to “America”. Clarita went on to study nursing and graduated from the University of the Philippines in 1954. Afterwards she travelled to the United States to work in Philadelphia, and Canada, in Nova Scotia. She took advantage of opportunities for international travel through nursing, including working in hospitals in London, England and Paris, France, a rare and courageous step for a single professional woman during this era. Clarita made her way back to Nova Scotia to work in the Tuberculosis Sanatorium during the time Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. She settled in Windsor, Ontario and worked at IODE hospital (Windsor Regional Hospital), Tuberculosis Sanatorium. She continued to work on the medical floor and chronic care unit until she retired in 1992. Clarita fell in love with Joseph Dunn, her “Joey”, in Windsor and married in 1969. They settled in Windsor’s west end, raised their two daughters Anita Czilli (Edward Czilli) and Darlene Dunn Mahler (J.C. Mahler). They have lived in this area for 55 years. Clarita was very social and belonged to the Katilingban Sang Ilonggo Club, founded in 1983 by a group of Fillipinos in Windsor, Ontario. She held the position as President from 1986-1988 and continued to sit on their board in various capacities for many years afterwards involved in the club’s charity work. Clarita and her husband Joseph always found strength in their Catholic faith and were members of Couples for Christ from 2004 until she became ill in 2015. She loved to travel, kept a lovely garden, sewed beautiful dresses, enjoyed dancing, and even when her dementia progressed, she would always dance the Cha Cha. Clarita was dancing until the end. Clarita came from a large family where many of her siblings have predeceased her. She is survived by her husband Joseph, her brother Edmundo, of Silay City, Philippines and her daughters Anita and Darlene. Over the past several years, her husband Joseph was her doting caregiver and beloved. The family is grateful to Clarita’s PSW Terry Piette who cared for her daily over the past 2 years. God sent Terry to our family to make sure that Clarita’s final days were full of joy, music and dancing. She loved Clarita immensely. A special thank you to Dr. Joseph Zakaria family physician for his compassion, sensitivity and attentiveness towards Clarita’s care over the years and for the doctors and nurses at Windsor Regional Hospital-Ouellette Campus, Emergency Department. If you so desire, donations to Alzheimer’s Society of Windsor & Es County would be appreciated by the family. Visitation will be held Sunday, January 15, 2023 from 2-5 pm and 7-9 pm with a prayer service at 4 pm At Families First, South Windsor, 3260 Dougall Ave (519-969-5841). On Monday, January 16, 2023, visitation will resume after 9 am until the time of a Funeral Mass at 10:00 am at Assumption Church, 350 Huron Church Road, Windsor. Burial to follow at St John the Evangelist Cemetery, 1688 County Road 46, South Woodslee.
