Claire Therese Surette
1955-2024
It is
with sadness that we announce the passing of Claire Therese Surette,
68, of Windsor, NS, on July 19, 2024 in the Hants Community Hospital,
Windsor. Born in Yarmouth, NS, she was the daughter of the late
Raymond and Pauline (Muise) Surette of Pinkney’s Point,
Yarmouth County.
Claire
graduated from Acadia University with a Bachelor of Science (Math) in
1976 and a Bachelor of Education in 1977. She also completed her
Master of Education from Mount Saint Vincent University in 2008.
Claire spent her entire teaching career in Windsor, teaching primarily
secondary math, retiring in 2012.
Claire
is survived by her four siblings: Norman (Barb Anderson) Surette,
Wolfville, NS; Marilyn (Ernie) Hatfield, Berwick, NS; Ronald (Jeanine)
Surette, Cape Sable Island, NS; Yvette (Philip «Kim»)
Rutherford, Prince George, BC.
Claire
is also survived by her much-loved nieces and nephews and their
children: Jeffrey (Sabra Sullivan) Surette (Sage and Bryce), Marion,
MA; Jenna (Curtis Clarke) Hatfield (Bennett), Bedford, NS; Michael
(Ashleigh) Rutherford (Alexander), Prince George, BC; Katherine (Janko
Beram) Rutherford, Prince George, BC; Brett Hatfield, Wolfville, NS.
As well, Claire will be dearly missed by her friends Sally Babie and
Steven Van Zoost, both who have supported her adventures throughout
the years.
Beyond
being a dedicated teacher, Claire had many interests including
collecting and appreciating artwork. She was an avid traveller, and
art galleries and museums were some of her favourite places to visit,
including the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. Claire
was a lover of good wine, and a connoisseur of fine French food, and
she enjoyed cooking and hosting dinner parties with friends and
family. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed music, especially jazz.
Claire was a firm believer in the benefits that could be gained from
practicing Tai Chi regularly.
The
family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Jen Bradley and the
other caregivers who supported Claire to remain in her own home until
the end of her life. We would also like to thank the doctors and
nurses at Hants Community Hospital for providing compassionate
palliative care.

Cremation has taken place and in
keeping with Claire’s wishes, there will be no visitation or
funeral service. A private interment will take place in St. Raphael
Cemetery in Pinkney’s Point, and Claire will be laid to rest
alongside her parents.
For
anyone wishing to make a donation in Claire’s memory, please
