Christina Bartlett (née Wimbs), 97, passed away peacefully in palliative care at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband David, infant son John, brothers John and Alan Wimbs, and nephew Robbie Wimbs.
Born in Glasgow and raised in Leicester, Christina moved to Canada in 1957 to teach in Toronto. She met David Bartlett on a bus tour in 1959, leading to a 59-year marriage until his death in 2018. Christina was a dedicated teacher and librarian with the Toronto Separate School Board.
After retiring, Christina pursued her passion for travel with David. She began dialysis in 2016 at St. Joseph’s renal clinic on Islington Avenue, earning the affectionate nickname «The Queen» from staff and patients. Despite her health challenges, she always maintained a positive outlook.
Christina’s faith, courage, and good nature were admired by all even as she faced end-stage kidney disease. She chose palliative care, remarking she was «overdue» and had lived a full, happy life.
Christina leaves behind her loving daughters Alison (Scott Smalley) and Catherine Fiona who devoted the last six years to her mother’s care, grandchildren Liam and Anya Smalley, a large extended family, and dearest friend Terri Tinella. She will be greatly missed by all.
Very special thanks and much gratitude to the amazingly skilled and compassionate medical staff of St. Joseph’s OLM wing, the hospital dialysis department, and the clinic on Islington Avenue. Thank you to the staff at Scarlett Heights Retirement Residence for providing such good care during the last six years.
Donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Heart and Stroke Foundation Canada, or Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
A visitation will be held at Turner & Porter Butler Chapel, 4933 Dundas Street West, on Monday, June 3 from 6-8 pm (special memories at 7:00 pm). A Funeral Mass at St. Gregory’s Church, 122 Rathburn Road, on Tuesday, June 4 at 9:30 am. Interment will follow at St. Philip’s Anglican Church Cemetery, 60 Dixon Road.
