Cheryl Louise Belbin O’Leary Obituary
Cheryl Louise «Belbin» O’Leary
It is with deep and profound sadness that the family of Cheryl Louise (Belbin) O’Leary announces her passing, peacefully and surrounded by family, on August 10, 2024, at Providence Care Hospital in Kingston. Left to mourn are her loving and beloved mother Marilyn (Burt) Belbin, sister Colleen (Paul) Harding, and brothers Charles (Michele) Belbin and Corey Belbin. Cheryl will also be deeply missed by her nieces, Alison (Brian) Hlady, Kate (Randy) Smith, and Tanith (Charlie) White, and nephew Lucas Belbin, and their children, Avery and Conor Smith, Anne Hlady, and Charles White. Predeceased by her father Robert Belbin.
Cheryl was born July 20, 1955 in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and had a happy childhood there with her parents and siblings. After graduating from Memorial University in St. John’s she became an educator and for 35 years was an exemplary teacher, including spending several years working with Indigenous children in Northern Alberta. She was gifted with an amazing skill in creativity and art and she used that skill immensely in her teaching. She had a special understanding for the child who found learning difficult and created ways to make that learning easier and fun for each child in her care. The last five years of her career she became a Learning Resource Coach and passed her extensive knowledge and ideas along to younger teachers.
Forever the cherished aunt, Cheryl also shared her creative gifts with her nieces and nephew and in later years with their children. Many hours were spent creating wonderful memories with Aunt Cheryl, whether it was arts, crafts, or baking. She had an incredible ability to decorate a cake for any occasion, and constantly amazed us all with her creations. And after retirement Cheryl found ways to use her talents for her church, leading the Messy Church initiative, working with the UCW, and serving on the board.
In her retirement years Cheryl’s best friend became her mother. As constant companions they loved traveling together, whether it was a drive in the beautiful countryside or sightseeing around Europe. Even just going uptown together for a cup of coffee was a treat.
Cheryl will be greatly missed by all who loved her deeply, but she will be happy to be reunited with her father as she goes to meet him in Heaven.
The family would like to thank Dr. Gray at Kingston Health Sciences Centre for his exemplary commitment and care, as well as the amazing staff at Providence Care Hospital for the exceptional and compassionate care they provided. Flowers welcome or memorial donations to Grace United Church or the Gananoque Humane Society, two causes close to Cheryl’s heart, would be greatly appreciated.
Visitation at Grace United Church, Gananoque, Sunday, August 18, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Funeral at 2:00 with reception to follow in the church hall. The service will be live streamed on the church’s YouTube channel.
