Charles Robin Wall, age 94, passed away peacefully at home in
Upper LaHave on August 01, 2023.
Born on January 7, 1929,
to James and Barbara Wall, in Hertfordshire UK, Robin (as he was known
all his life) was the youngest of 2 brothers. He spent his childhood
and younger adulthood in England, where he experienced the war years
– often in evacuated boarding schools in the west country.
As a boy, he was always interested in art and music –
excelling at painting and drawing and teaching himself to play
classical piano pieces by ear. He joined the RAF after the war in 1948
where he trained as a radio-fitter, and was sent out on active duty to
Singapore, where he served with a late-model Spitfire squadron. After
his tour, he went back to the UK and put his skills to use with the
British Civil Service as a technician in armaments and ballistics. He
moved to Canada in 1954 – continuing his career in the field
– and met and married his wife Mary (nee Carr-Harris) in
1956. They had 3 children while in Canada, before moving back to the
UK in 1960. While there, he continued to advance his technical skill
– even presenting a paper on breakthrough high-speed
photography at a conference in the Hague. The family house was always
full of his artworks, the sound of his piano playing and his many
craft projects. He was always making something fun for his children
– from a bobsled to bows and arrows. After his own father
passed away in 1965, the family again moved back to Canada in 1966,
where once again, Robin continued to contribute to advanced ballistics
and even the NASA space program. In 1967, he switched careers
completely and became a teacher at the local intermediate school in
Quebec’s Eastern Townships while beginning his BFA program
at what was then Sir George Williams University (now Concordia) in
Montreal. After moving to Montreal’s west island for 2 years
while he finished his degree, the family then moved to rural eastern
Ontario, where he spent 12 years as an art professor at Saint Lawrence
College in Cornwall. Once his children were grown, he and Mary moved
to the Island of Grand Manan in the Bay of Fundy, where he built a
house and studio and became a fulltime artist -selling his wonderful
etchings and teaching private art classes. After 8 years, they moved
across the country to BC to spend more time close to their
grandchildren. Mary passed away in 2019, after a long struggle with
dementia, and Robin – always up for one more adventure,
moved again to Nova Scotia in 2021 to live with his eldest son and
daughter-in-law.
A loving and devoted husband, father, and
grandfather – not to mention artist, musician, craftsman,
boat builder (4 of them!), gardener, avid angler and nature lover
– Robin will always live in the hearts of his family and
friends. He is survived by his 3 children, Alan, Barbara, and Robert,
and 3 grandchildren, Travis, Nigel, and Mary-Joy.
There
will be no service, but there will be a private celebration of life to
be held by both his BC and Nova Scotia families.
In lieu of
flowers, the family would like to request that donations be made to
the Alzheimer Society in the name of Mary Wall.
