Born on April
6th, 1941, in Chatham NB, to Heloise (Losier)
Hogan and William J. Hogan, Charles Edward (Bud) Hogan was the second
born of seven children. He was nicknamed «Bud» by his mum
when he was young because she said that as he grew, he simply
‘blossomed’. He was known for his signature curly
hair, big blue eyes, infectious smile and kind
disposition.
Over his
lifetime, Bud held several different sales roles including sales
manager at Flemings/Walkers Men’s Clothing stores in
Fredericton as a very young man; followed by his time with the Daily
Gleaner newspaper; and he subsequently spent nearly 20 years at CFNB
radio in Fredericton. Later in his career, after he moved to Moncton
NB, he worked for Toyota Moncton, Sutherland Excavating Ltd, and
Atlantic Insulated Wall Panels
Inc.
Bud loved people
and was unendingly supportive of his beloved family and friends. His
approach to life was straightforward and honest. Whatever he had, he
was always willing to share it—be it his home, his
possessions, his time, or the money in his pocket. Simply put, Bud was
a gem. He loved music (Leonard Cohen in particular, who he and his
sister Anne even had the opportunity to see once in concert) and he
was an excellent dancer. He was a popular presence on any dance floor,
either doing «the Hogan Shuffle» (a move coined by him and
his brothers) or waltzing with ‘his girls’,
Danielle and Rian. In his youth, he loved the water and was a strong
swimmer. Bud relished golfing and coffee with family and friends,
camping, day trips and lobster boils in the summer (and never turned
down a lobster roll from
Lenny’s).
In the role of
‘dad’ to Danielle and Rian, Bud excelled beyond
measure. His steadfast love, support and acceptance never wavered, and
these gifts were also extended to their friends over the years. As a
brother, he was proud of, and loyal to, his sisters and brothers, just
as they were to him. The role of grandfather unearthed
incredible joy for Bud. He simply adored Ethan, Mikaya,
Marley and Tate, as each (in that order) came under the fold of his
love and encouragement. He gave to them through his heart
and his presence by playing cards and boardgames, watching movies
together, attending sporting events, giving legendary hugs, and when
they were little, he always had small red boxes of raisins
at-the-ready for little hands. He faithfully shared in special events
like birthdays, holidays and related traditions like gingerbread house
building—where no sprinkle or candy went unused. Overall, he
took great pride in his family, and he was likewise cherished. If you
could measure a man’s wealth by the love of his family and
friends, Edward (Buddy) Hogan was a very wealthy
man.
Bud is survived
by his two daughters, Danielle Hogan (Jeff Hoyt), and Rian Hogan
(David Carson); two sisters, Mary Glynn (John) of Riverview, and Anne
Hogan of Moncton; four grandchildren, Ethan & Marley Carson,
and Mikaya & Tate Hoyt-Hogan; and many beloved cousins,
nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents;
his three brothers, William «Bill» Hogan, David James Hogan,
David Joseph Hogan; and one sister, Betty
Hogan.
The family would
like to thank Dr. Pamela Mansfield and all the skilled, compassionate,
and smiling nursing staff of the palliative care unit at the Moncton
City Hospital who cared for Bud this summer. Their considerate care
meant the world to us.
To those who feel
able and are inclined, in lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated
to a bursary the family has established in Bud’s name
through the Fredericton Community Foundation. The bursary,
‘A Fine Art Start’, will go to a student in
financial need who is looking to attend a Fine Arts

Mass will be
celebrated on Tuesday, September 5th at 1:00
p.m., at St. Dunstan’s Parish church in Fredericton (and livestreamed
through the church) with Father John Carten officiating. A reception
will follow. Arrangement for Bud’s funeral are in care of
Bishop’s Funeral Home (506) 458-1885.
