Charles Atherton Prosser
Our amazing Dad, Grampie and Great Grampie passed away on August 1, 2023 at the age of 93.
He was born to Robert and Hazel Prosser on February 27, 1930 in Lynn Massachusetts. When he was a young boy the family moved back to Kemptville, Nova Scotia to the family farm. He assisted his father on the farm and with logging in the winter months. It was there that he met the love of his life Jean Jeffery. He and Jean married in 1952 and went on to have eight children, Brian (Anne), Susan (Eric Sadler d.), Michael (Cathy), Jeffery (Angela), Pamela, Robert (Christene), Sandra (Bill Houlden) and Troy (Heather). Dad and Mum raised this large brood in our beloved home on Mary St. It was always a welcoming place to return to as the family grew.
Dad was a “salt of the earth” kind of guy who loved his 17 grandchildren; Jennifer, Stacey, Owen, Ryan, Leigh, Brendan, Jordan, Evan, Shawn, Chelsey, Jocelyn, Sarah, Paul, Elyse, Claire, Hudson and Gabrielle and his 11 great grandchildren; Charlie, North, Phoenix, June, Lily, Ewan, Iris(d), Mackenzie, Theo, Henry and Scottie.
Dad was a hard-working guy who at times worked two jobs to provide for his growing family. He retired from Beatrice Foods after 40+ years in the dairy business. We never felt like we didn’t or couldn’t have anything we wanted. He never discouraged us from participating in any extracurricular activity or sport. He and Mum budgeted to make it come true for us. As we grew older, he and Mum instilled that incredible work ethic in us and we all had paper routes or other part time jobs.
We look back fondly on our great camping vacations and trips back to Nova Scotia. We were a great source of entertainment as the campers watched our army land and efficiently set up camp under the direction of our extremely organized leaders. Everyone had specific tasks to complete.
Dad was a quiet guy but extremely well read and knowledgeable on past and current events. He loved to read his daily newspaper and watch the news. He was a huge Blue Jays fan and the best “Arm Chair Manager” they ever had. He was extremely organized and neat. Everything had its place. He was always impeccably dressed, even for the most casual of occasions.
After Mum passed away in 2020 the homestead was too much for him and he sadly had to sell the place he called home for 60 years. He moved into a beautiful apartment that Robert had created at Sandra and Bill’s home. He loved his new space and under the incredible care of Sandra he thrived until his passing. It was a great place to visit and we all helped out where we could.
Dad will be reunited with his beloved wife Jean, sister Ruth Greene and brother-in-law Art Greene, sister and brother-in-law Phyllis and Bill Walsh, brother in law Wayne Jeffery, brother in law Reigh Poole and son in law Eric Sadler. He is survived by his loving family and sister-in-law Ruth Poole, brother and sister-in-law Randall and Mary Jeffery and sister in law Muriel Jeffery.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to the dedicated doctors, nurses, therapists and support staff in the ED, Floors G5, F5 and F4 Palliative care unit, Lake Ridge Health Oshawa for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers Dad would request that you perform an act of kindness for someone in his name. Donations in his memory can be made to Lakeview Cemetery in Kemptville N.S., the Humane Society of Durham Region or a charity of your choice. A private funeral and interment will take place at a future date in Kemptville, Nova Scotia.
