Chandra passed away peacefully with Donna-Faye at his side on Saturday December 17, 2022. He is predeceased by his parents Dolphine and Albert Madhosingh, sister Grace and brother-in-law Sakel Seemungal. Chandra will be remembered by his nephew Dr. Terrance Seemungal and wife Jacinta, his niece Christine and grandniece Jeanine, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Lois and Fred Fedorak and their three daughters. Chandra comes from a family of eight uncles, three aunts and fifty cousins.
He moved to Vancouver. British Columbia in 1955 to study at the University of British Columbia. Donna-Faye and Chandra married Saturday, July 4, 1964 at the UBC Faculty Club.
Originally from San Fernando, Trinidad, Madhosingh has performed several key roles for the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), including Media Coordinator, International Umpire, Referee, Canadian Coach, mentor, and educator, while sitting on several committees.
Chandra initiated the very successful table tennis programme at Britannia Secondary in Vancouver producing many national team members. He led, as coach, the Canadian Junior Team on its historic one-month tour of China 50 years ago in 1973 for ping pong diplomacy. He also started the BC High School Table Tennis Championships and later expanded to elementary schools.
Chandra was president of Table Tennis Canada in the 1980’s. In 2019 he was elected as a member of TTCAN’s Board of Director, more than 30 years after being its President. His last “in- person” appearance at the national level was at the 2022 Canadian Championships in Mississauga, ON, in July. He contributed to every aspect of the game in his over 55 years of volunteering and travelling to at least 150 countries.
“Physics pays the bills, but table tennis is his second love”, says Bill Phillips (Tribune Staff writer). “Chandra was one of the Sports advisors in 2002 at the Olympics that would combine his keen physicist skills with his table tennis skills – everything from the size of the gym to frictional qualities of the floor. Also checking for the lighting, humidity of the air, location of air vents and anything which will affect the flight of the ball. And, it’s all done with the eye for making a perfect playing area for the games.”
Dr. Chandra Madhosingh was an Earth and Space Science teacher at Britannia School and a walking encyclopedia on things astronomic. He attended National Space and Aeronautics Administration’s Jet Propulsion Laboratories events in Pasadena and San Jose, California as BC’s NASA science liaison. His writings included science articles for The Vancouver Sun newspaper and chapters on earth and space for text books. He was awarded Outstanding BC Science Teacher of the Year in 1988. Chandra finished his teaching career at UBC and continued to keep up to date by attending lectures at TRIUMPH and Zooms from various universities.
Chandra relaxed by playing tennis doubles with his friends and bridge with his colleagues. He and Donna-Faye travelled for fun when time permitted – for example, around the world trip in 1973 – and to Trinidad and other destinations. He never forgot his roots and stayed in contact with Trinidad bowling friends and taking part in Trinidad celebrations.
A Celebration of Life will be held April 30th at the Point Grey Golf & Country Club from 2 to 4 pm.
