It is truly with the heaviest of hearts that we announce that Chad Larence Martin passed away peacefully on February 22nd, after a 7-month battle with cancer. He fought with such grace, determination and hope, and through tears and sadness, we can all agree that Heaven just got a whole lot funnier.
Chad will be incredibly missed by the love of his life and fiancé, Erin Ruplen. They were best friends who truly never wanted to be apart, spending 15 and a half amazing years together. He was the modern day Tim the Tool Man Taylor, and he found his Jill in Erin. Throughout their relationship, they lived in a variety of areas in the GHTA. They finally bought their dream home and property in Greensville in 2017, right around the corner from Erin’s parents, where a warm meal was always close by. Their house had nothing but potential, as they spent the last 5 years fixing it up, as well as beginning and abandoning more extensive renovations, realizing they didn’t need anything more than what they had. They had two dogs, Chewy and Bentley, who will miss their dad and sharing his popcorn and daily banana. Erin and Chad’s love and incredible support for one another was inspiring. In the last 7 months especially, everyone around them watched how truly amazing their love and devotion was for one another.
Chad will be incredibly missed by his dad Larry and girlfriend Sam. Larry and Chad spent hours in the garage tinkering away, swapping stories, tools and trailers. “Chad, thanks for the laughs, thanks for the memories but above all, thanks for being you, my son. Love Dad.”
Survived by his mother Linda, sister Jennifer and nephew William. Jen and Chad had a truly special relationship that cannot be recreated. They had a unique bond that only they understood. They knew each other down to their core, always found themselves in an endless back and forth of ridiculousness until someone caved, but most importantly were playful dreamers who deep down, always supported one another. Chad will be missed by his nephew William who always laughed when Uncle Chad was around.
Chad will be missed by his Uncle Len (Margot, predeceased by his Aunt Joan) and his cousins Brandon (Catherine) and Ashley (James). Chad also had a very special relationship with his grandparents Fred and Julie (both predeceased). He shared vivid memories of pretending to be sick just so he could skip school and spend the day playing in the garden and field, but especially eating his grandma’s yummy sandwiches and treats.
Chad will be deeply missed by his mother-in law Elayne Ruplen (predeceased by Norm Ruplen). Chad was the problem solver, barbecuer, and crisis de-escalator of the Ruplen family, but most importantly, he was the son that Elayne and Norm never had. He fit into the family seamlessly with his loving heart and hungry belly, and especially spiced things up with his never-ending hijynx. He especially loved taking full advantage of Elayne and Norm’s innocence; ie. flipping over multiple art pieces in their home to see how long it took them to notice.
He will be missed forever by his sister and brother-in-law, Lara Ruplen and Geoff Skerlan. Chad was the brother that Lara never asked for but she was so happy he came into her life. She is the reason he joined the family. Her approval on the first day they met was everything Erin needed to know that he was a keeper. Erin is forever thankful for that night at the Collins, when Lara smiled and said, “Oh, I like this one”. Geoff and Chad could talk about anything and those chats are what he’ll really miss at family get-togethers. Chad was the proudest uncle of Matthew, Chloe and Andrew Skerlan, who had endless laughs, and will really miss his big hugs and playing Big Bad Monster.
Chad made friends everywhere he went, but his close circle of friends will painfully feel his absence. It didn’t matter if you knew Chad your entire life, worked casually with him, or were meeting him for the first time, he had a way of making you feel welcomed, included, and without a doubt, made you laugh until it physically hurt. His sense of humour along with his infectious smile, drew everyone in and there was no one with a brighter and more glass-half-full outlook on life than Chad. Everyone will agree that he lived a full, beautiful life in his short 36 and a half years. Taken way too soon, but leaving an incredible mark on everyone’s heart.
To say Chad tested and tried every job out there would be an understatement. His long list of jobs include but are not limited to; welder, newspaper deliverer, pizza deliverer, landscaper, patient transfer, employee at a motorcycle shop, mortgage broker, granite installer, Neelands Refrigeration shop employee, professional pest, and the list goes on. In the last 10 years of his life, after working as a Tower and Mobile Crane Operator (Local 793), in true Chad form, he shocked everyone when he changed careers to become a Financial Advisor with Edward Jones. The guy could literally do anything. Although for years, Chad talked about owning his own business, and after realizing a desk job wasn’t for him, he fulfilled his dreams of owning and operating his own contracting company. He proudly named it Harvest Road Homes, and renovated many homes in the last year and a half of his life, leaving his mark and extra screws in each room he touched.
Chad always knew a little bit about everything, and had endless curiosity, hobbies and interests. He would jump into any new endeavour with both feet and put 150% into it. He was a boxer, goalie, dirt biker, cycler, fisherman, car mechanic, artist, amateur drummer, and an up and coming tattoo artist.
Despite his debilitating and 7-month long fight with cancer which took the eyesight in his left eye, and ultimately left him paralyzed from the waist down, he fought with such grace, strength, and even somehow, humour. Even though he was enduring such emotional and physical pain, he still had the ability and stamina to make the nurses and doctors laugh during his daily appointments. No matter what kind of day he had the day before, he woke up the next with a motivated smile, ready for his treatment. He fought as hard as he loved, right down to the last minute of his life. He is an inspiration to us all, and a hero to say the least and he will be remembered as such.
On behalf of Chad, Erin and our families, we would like to personally thank his team at Juravinski (Dr. Lee, Dr. Kartolo & Dr. Shaw), for treading such unknown and scary waters alongside us. We would also like to extend our deepest gratitude to the team of nurses at the Hamilton General in 6 West Spine Unit, his physiotherapists (Karen and Anna Lynn), his social workers (Jennifer and Jason) and his nurse practitioner (Alyson) for taking such good care of him during such a difficult time. Even though Chad spent his last 3 and a half weeks in a hospital bed, he felt loved and truly cared for. Lastly, we would like to personally thank Chad’s home care nurse, Ashley, who we have been lucky to also call one of our best friends. Ashley, thank you for everything you did for Chad.
We would also like to thank everyone who donated, sent gift cards, dropped off warm meals, and helped Erin, Chad and their families throughout the last 7 months. We genuinely could not have made it through without your never-ending and loving support. We are forever grateful for the village that lifted us up when we were down. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
Chad Martin: lover of apple fritters, Grandad’s walnut crunches and Fortinos’ pizza pretzels, a proud member of the Townies baseball team, and a strong advocate for bidets. Life will truly never be the same without Chad.
A private cremation has taken place. Please join us for an open house Celebration of Chad’s Life, at The Highacre, in Greensville (667 Harvest Road) on March 19th, 2023 from 1p.m. – 5 p.m. Parking with a short walk can be found on the side streets Wesite, Meldrum and Forest along one side. Please read the signs carefully. Due to limited capacity at our venue, we are only able to invite the children of our immediate family. We hope you understand and can still join us to celebrate Chad’s life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Save our Scruff, a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing dogs and finding them safe and suitable permanent homes through adoption, advocacy and education. You can donate here:
