It is with heavy hearts that we announce Catherine “Kay” Gibbon (nee Butt), age 81, passed away suddenly, but peacefully May 8th, 2024 upon returning from her routine morning drive with her loving husband of 64 years, Don (Dynamite) Gibbon.
Kay was born in Carbonear, the oldest of 8 children. The family moved to Stephenville in the mid 1940’s where Andrew was employed in the construction and maintenance of the Earnest Harmon Air Force Base. While always remaining strongly connected to her Carbonear heritage, it was in Stephenville that Kay met the love of her life, Don Gibbon, and they raised their family there. She developed into a very gentle and graceful woman possessing many talents and gifts. Her sense of loyalty was evident in her over 42 years working at Ben’s Pharmacy where she was well-respected by both co-workers and customers and remembered fondly by many even after her retirement. However, Kay’s real work was behind the scenes supporting her husband in his active career with both radio communications and municipal government. Here her attention to detail served an irreplaceable role by helping organize and schedule the daily demands of family and work and the upkeep of the home. Her sense of adventure and fun combined with a voracious appetite for diverse knowledge led her to become an expert on the lives of Princess Diana, Charley Pride, and Rory McIlroy, current
