Carl MacKeigan Obituary
Carl MacKeigan
North Sydney
It is with profound grief that we announce the passing of Carl Tuck MacKeigan, age 91, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, uncle and friend, on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Sydney Mines on November 7, 1932, he was the son of the late William and Emma (Crowther) MacKeigan.
Carl is survived by his children, Kim (Sandy), Cavell (Rocky), Carl (Rose), Maxine (Andrew), and Sandi Lynn; his 9 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly, as well as his lifelong friend, Danny LeBlanc.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Alberta “Birt” (Maxwell); two sons Billy and Bobby; a daughter in infancy; twin great-grandsons; his brothers Johnny, Bill, Albie, Elmer; two sisters Majorie and Edie. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was also predeceased by a special lady, Susan Holic.
Carl was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 008 in Sydney Mines, and right up until the time of his passing, he was a member of the Monday Night Men’s Dart League. Darts was very much his passion. He was so proud to have started the youth darts program 40 years ago. Some of his youth players still play darts to this day and that made him so happy.
Carl was a coal miner for 27 years, working first at the Princess Mine in Sydney Mines and later at the Prince Mine in Point Aconi. He raised his family on the Tobin Rd with his wife, Alberta, where their friendships with the Targetts, MacIntoshes, and Holics resembled that of extended family. He was a die-hard Montreal Canadiens fan all of his life.
The family would like to thank Dr. Wawer and the nurses of 4-West at the Northside General Hospital for their care and compassion shown towards Carl.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home at 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A visitation will be held for Carl from 1-3 p.m. on Wednesday at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 008 at 769 Main Street, Sydney Mines, with a celebration of life service to commence at 3p.m. A light lunch will be provided following the service. Online condolences can be left for the family by writing on the tribute wall of the obituary page at
