It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our dear father and grand-father, Calvin Edmund Ryan «Cal» on Dec 5, 2023.
Calvin was born on July 3, 1943 in Birchy Cove, Bonavista Bay. In his teens he studied Power Engineering in St. John’s and spent the bulk of his career working with the Newfoundland Light & Power Company at their steam plant facility on the South Side Road, overlooking St. John’s Harbour and the Narrows.
Calvin and his wife Marina lived in Mount Pearl for over 35 years where they lovingly raised their family. Calvin was very proud of his three sons and their beautiful families. He adored his nieces and nephews, sister and brother in-laws.
At the age of 51, Calvin began a journey that would force him to end his career and focus on his health. Despite being legally blind and almost completely deaf, Calvin was always a positive person, never needing any more than some good company, a telephone, a few crossword scratch tickets and a delicious meal. Calvin overcame a lot in his lifetime from managing diabetes, to battling cancer, kidney failure, multiple seizures and several heart attacks. He was a fighter through and through with never a complaint to be made. He was a caring and loving father, grandfather, uncle, brother and a friend, cherished by all who knew him. If you look up the meaning of a true warrior…. …. Our dad was all of that and more!
Left to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful memories are his three sons Rich (Tanya), Tim (Mandy) and Jason (Teah) and his treasured grandchildren Julianna, Ashton, Molly and Luke.
Calvin is predeceased by his parents Wallace and Jenny, sister Louise (Boyd), daughter Kelly Ann, Nephew and nieces Jeffery Cuff and Heidi Dunn and his forever loving wife Marina (Cuff).
Visitation will take place at Strathie’s Funeral Home, Bonavista on Friday, December 8th from 7:00-9:00pm and Saturday, December 9th from 2:00-4:00pm & 7:00-9:00pm.
Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, December 10th at 10:30am from Memorial United Church.
