On Thursday, August 22, 2024, Buryl Jonas Slack of Osoyoos passed away prematurely after a short, untreated illness, surrounded by her family. She is predeceased by her husband Percival James Slack.
Buryl is survived by her sister Lorraine Benedick; sons Wayne James Slack, James Lee Slack and Lorne Jonas Slack; daughter Dalyce Jeannette Reid; grandsons Greg, Kevin, Mike, Desmond, Jamal and Jesse; granddaughters Natasha and Sharona; great-grandsons Ashton, Linden, Dane, Taiomah, Kaleb, Brandon and Mason; great-granddaughters Keila and Azlan; great-great-granddaughter Xaelle; nephew Craig; and nieces Cindy and Jacqueline.
Buryl was born to Fiona Emily Maude Muriel Mitchell and Richard Morris Jonas at the North Vancouver Hospital on December 31, 1934. The family lived in Ladner, BC until she was 2 years old when she moved to Oliver, BC with her mother and step-father Bruce Fry. She grew up very socially active in Oliver and usually managed to get her and her friends in trouble by going on adventures and chasing boys.
After graduating from SOHS, Buryl Jonas Fry moved to Prince Rupert, BC and began working in the Singer Sewing Store where she met James Slack, and shortly after became Buryl Jonas Slack. The couple moved back to Oliver with their new son Wayne James Slack, went on to adopt Dalyce Jeannette Slack and James Lee Slack, and eventually had Lorne Jonas Slack.
Buryl’s main hobbies were acting in the local drama club, using her water-witching skills to locate well water for her neighbours and being a general shit disturber. She worked part-time sewing and sign making as well as coaching little league baseball. She also loved rock hounding, painting, drawing, and pattern making. Buryl and Jim bought the Family fruit orchard and at the same time started an electrical contracting business, often working 20 hours a day. Later they decided to plant the largest pussy willow farm in Canada and sell them all across Canada and the US. Buryl and Jim travelled to many places throughout BC.
Buryl moved from Oliver to Anarchist Mountain in Osoyoos in 2004. She loved being in nature and cherished all her mountain neighbours.
She truly was a force of nature and a formidable opponent, using her high IQ and photographic memory to fight for the causes she believed in, like keeping the gas turbine out of Oliver and supporting the Oliver Hospital. She was extremely secure in her beliefs and opinions and would often seek to change the world rather than conform to it, no matter the cost.
A graveside service will be held for Buryl at the Oliver Cemetery on Tuesday, September 17th at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, Buryl would have appreciated that donations be made to the BCSPCA.
