Brian Silcoff died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, February 17, 2024, in his 82nd year. A native of Montreal, Brian was a loving husband, father and grandfather, a passionate lover of music, books, theatre, films, hiking, cross-country skiing, great jokes, travel and playing klaberjass and backgammon with family. He is survived by his wife, M. Janette Hamilton-Silcoff, children Sean and Marjorie and their spouses Erin Downey and Ciaran Winter, and grandchildren Clara, Benjamin and Jack, and first wife Carol Silcoff and her spouse Gene Swimmer, and sister-in-law Huguette. Brian is predeceased by parents Clara Salpeter and Joseph Silcoff, brothers Bernie and Sydney Silcoff and sister-in-law Charlotte Moses.
Brian was a teacher, librarian, amateur actor and entrepreneur whose career highlights included teaching in the Montreal area and presiding over the Ottawa Room at the Ottawa Public Library. Brian also took great pleasure running the popular OFME concert listing service for Ottawa folk music lovers.
The family is extremely grateful to all the staff at Garry J. Armstrong long-term care home, particularly those on the fourth floor, for their exceptional c are and support, and to Moe Beleattar, who provided essential care and friendship to Brian in his final years.
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod St., (at O’Connor), Ottawa on Friday, February 23, 2024 from 11am – 1pm. Memorial Service in the Chapel at 1p.m., followed by a reception.
In lieu of flowers, donations to The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County or Blue Skies Music Festival would be appreciated.
