It is with
profound sadness that we, the family of Brian R. MacNeil of
Antigonish, announce his peaceful passing in the Palliative Care Unit
of St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish on December
7, 2023.
Born July 14,
1953 in Sydney to the late Michael and Mary (MacKenzie) MacNeil, he is
survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Janie (Fleury) MacNeil; three
children, Chris, Angela (Matthew) Donald, and Craig (Kailee); two
granddaughters, Isla and Aria Donald; two grandsons, Ben and Alex
MacNeil; sister, Shirley (William) Reid; as well as numerous nieces
and nephews and many other family
connections.
Brian
developed a deep love for the Bras d’Or Lakes at an early
age with a particular fondness for the Christmas Island and Iona
areas. While always maintaining a close connection to Cape Breton,
Brian moved to Antigonish where he completed his Bachelor of Business
Administration at St. Francis Xavier University. He met Janie in 1975
while working at MT&T and after marrying a year later, they
moved to Antigonish. Brian was employed by the Town of
Antigonish for over 30 years, ending his career as the Town Clerk and
Treasurer where he was highly respected for his calmness and
composure, especially in difficult
situations.
Brian was a
dedicated and loving father who loved playing sports, listening to
music, and taking the kids fishing, swimming, skating, and
boating. He had immense love and pride in his children, and
he was thrilled to take on the role as the fun, silly, and loving
«Papa» to his grandchildren. Those closest to Brian describe
him as loyal, kind, generous, and patient. His laugh was contagious
and will be missed tremendously.
Remaining
very active into his final years, Brian enjoyed attending X-Men games,
and he found great pleasure and solace in nature where he enjoyed
walking/hiking, gardening, and exploring the Bras d’Or
Lakes. He loved a good game of Bridge and always looked forward to the
time spent with his Bridge partners. He was also involved in many
volunteer activities with the Knights of Columbus, a group that we
would like to thank sincerely for their kindness and support. We would
also like to extend our gratitude to the Palliative Care team at St.
Martha’s Hospital and the VON for their exceptional care and
compassion.
Cremation has
taken place, and there will be no visitation by his request. His
funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Ninian Cathedral on Monday at
10:00am with Father Danny MacLennan
presiding.
Donations in
Brian’s name may be made to the Knights of Columbus or St.
Martha’s Regional Hospital
Foundation.
Funeral
arrangements are under the direction of C.L. Curry Funeral Home,
