It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brenda Marie ‘Brennies’ Cadieux on May 12, 2023.
Brenda Marie Cadieux was born on May 2, 1942 to Maria Magdalenich Kraukamp and Aubrey Ashton Mansfield in Johannesburg, South Africa. Brenda is predeceased by her brother Alphie, and is survived by her husband Andy Pap, daughter Sharon Cadieux (Walt), son Paul-Aubrey Cadieux (Mary), grandchildren Ryan, Kiel, Jenny, Stuart, Chloe, Anja, and sisters Dawn, Audrey and Sharron.
Brenda was a free spirit – she never did anything by the book. At 18, she left home, travelled to England for a short stay, then hopped a freighter to Canada, where she met and married Julien Cadieux. They travelled extensively with their young children, Sharon and Paul-Aubrey through Africa, finally settling in South Africa. During this time, she ran an interior decorating company from her home, and employed several people. Brenda had most of her family close by in South Africa, and had a wide circle of friends. After moving back to Canada, she met Andy – They built a house together, and often hunted, fished and camped with their dogs Noella, Cora and Bully.
Together they ran a window blind business, along with other small businesses through the years. She helped start up the Mycological Society in Kelowna, and finally moved to Kamloops where she started Forest to Fork, a small business selling wild mushrooms. She wrote and published a book, “Morels vs Morals” and was known as ‘The Mushroom Lady’ in Kamloops.
After retiring from the mushroom business, Brenda picked up pickleball as a hobby, and enjoyed sewing christmas outfits and pyjamas for her grandchildren in Kamloops and Boston. She married Andy in 2015, and shortly after, faced one of the greatest challenges of her life due to serious unexpected health issues. After many months in hospital, her health never completely recovered, and further health issues arose as time went on.
Brenda was a loving mother, wife, and ouma. She loved her grandchildren unconditionally, and was so very proud of each of them. Her grandchildren thought of her as the coolest ‘ouma’ ever, and were always curious to see what unusual gift she would give them on their birthdays.
Above all, she really enjoyed having her family around her. She had many happy years with Andy, and right up till the end, wanted him to be happy regardless of how the future unfolded. Mom – we will miss you dearly.
We want to thank our mom’s neurologist, and the care givers that helped her during the last few years,as well the staff at Ponderosa for their kindness, and compassion during her time there.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist church in Kamloops on June 9, 2023 at 2pm. Following the service, family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life – please contact Sharon at Sharon.cadieux@gmail.com for further details.
