Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Brenda Elaine Hancock announce her passing, on March 9, 2023, at the Dr. Hugh Twomey Health Care Centre. Brenda was 64 years old. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are: father Ford, brothers Wade, Boyd (Jean), and Robert (Penny); sister Valerie (Roger); nephews Matthew (Brittany), Tyler (Kathryn), Jared (Shyla), Joshua (Victoria), and Brady (Sydney); nieces Erin, and Claire (Melcolm). She was predeceased by her mom Beryl and sister in law Laura. Brenda also leaves to mourn a large circle of relatives and friends.
Brenda was born on August 14, 1958, in Botwood, Newfoundland. Her youth was filled with Girl Guides, broomball, church activities, camping, friends and time with her grandparents, especially Nan and Bank Hancock.
Her life’s calling was to serve as an officer in the Salvation Army. She completed training college in 1980 with her session, “The Proclaimers of Salvation”. Brenda’s Corps appointments included Harry’s Harbour and Seal Cove / White Bay. Due to her outstanding administrative abilities she was given an opportunity to lead in Halifax at the Bethany Home. Brenda’s independence and confidence led her to the mission field in Singapore, as the Administrator of the Changi Boy’s Home. She returned back to Canada to lead as the Administrator of Broadview Village in Ottawa.
Retirement from the Salvation Army came largely from issues with a chronic bad back. Brenda endured three major surgeries but these obstacles did not keep her from pursuing her dreams and life. She loved photography, traveling, spending time with family and friends, supporting the Botwood Salvation Army church and cooking/baking for others. Much of Brenda’s travels and photography were experienced with her good friend Christine Gray, as they explored many Newfoundland towns.
Brenda’s working life continued in roles such as a caregiver in Grand Falls, a clerical assistant in Dr. Dobbin’s Medical Office and as an administrator with MCP. Her final pursuit was as an owner/manager of a Subway franchise in La Crete, Alberta.
Brenda’s health deteriorated in recent years and she was diagnosed with a neurological disorder, Sarcoidosis. This disease eventually confined her to a bed and took away her independence, which was very difficult for her.
Brenda will be remembered for her great love for her family, especially her nieces and nephews. She was always thinking of others and loved to celebrate life milestones of her family and friends.
The family would like to thank everyone who cared for and supported Brenda, especially since she entered the Twomey Centre. This was a lonely time but friends and family helped her spend her days. Milton and Gloria Samson have poured their hearts into Brenda for the past 10 years and as a family we are forever grateful. Thank you to the caring staff at the Twomey Centre. Brenda really appreciated her caregivers, both when she was living in her home and in the Twomey Centre.
