Obituary
With great sadness we announce the passing of Bonnie Lee Doncaster, age 72, Port Howe and formerly of Oxford on Monday, October 7th in the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre after a long courageous battle with cancer. Her spirit and fight through this time never wavered and she was a true inspiration to all who were fortunate to be around her. Born in Springhill, she was a daughter of the late Shirley Ira and Opal Audrey (McNulty) Black. Bonnie is survived by her husband, Robert «Bob»; daughters, Shelley (Dave) Rideout, Elmsdale; Susan (Brad) Peddle, Antigonish; grandsons, Tyler and Brady Peddle; sisters, Heather (Jerry) MacLellan, Masstown; Cindy (Alan) Berry, Avonport; nieces and nephews, Kevin, Kim, Korinne, Heidi and Laura. Bonnie’s family was the most important thing in her life. She married her high school sweetheart in 1970 and 54 years later they were still very much in love and best friends. Their life together revolved around the “ Three F’s” – family, friends and fun. Bonnie’s pride and joy were her two daughters. There was never a sports event, school function or special occasion that she missed. Her daughters were the center of her world…until she was blessed with her two beautiful grandsons, Tyler and Brady. Everything then shifted to the boys and their HOCKEY. Early mornings, weekend games or trips to see them play became a priority for her, she loved every minute of it and was their biggest fan. Upon graduation from Oxford Regional High School, Bonnie and Bob moved to Toronto where she began her career in banking at TD Bank. She spent 4 years there before she returned to Oxford and worked at Scotiabank. Bonnie then transitioned to the Royal Bank in Amherst where she would spend a remarkable 35 years, retiring as the Assistant Manager. She thought the world of her co-workers, establishing lifelong friendships, resulting in many road trips, cottage get-togethers and good times. Bonnie’s happy place was “The Beach”. She could not wait to get there every Friday evening during her professional days, wine glass in hand at the beginning of the beach lane. Her extended family became the “Beach Crew,” and she cherished every minute with all of them. She was the heartbeat of the beach and was always up for a good time. Whether it was a bonfire, or happy hour at the gazebo, she was there. She loved her rides on their boat, whether it was with a group of family or friends or just her and Bob cruising the shoreline, it was where she felt most free and content. She left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered, her energy and positivity were contagious right up until the end. She will be missed beyond words, but her memory and spirit will forever be with us. Thank you to all her doctors and staff in Moncton and Antigonish over the last two and half years. Also, a special thank you to Kathryn Boyd and the Oncology team at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital for their care and support over the last year. A visitation to celebrate Bonnie’s life will be held from 2-4pm and 6-8pm on Thursday October 10 in MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, 5075 Main Street, Oxford. Donations may be made in Bonnie’s memory to Cathy’s Place Cancer Resource Center, St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Flowers are welcome.
