Beverly Spencer Obituary
Beverly Joan Spencer (nee Johnston)
1937 – 2024
Born June 23, 1937 in a house on Main St. in Gananoque to Helen (nee Killen) and Ford Johnston. She has two younger sisters Patricia Campbell (Ian) and Mary Ellen Brown (Art). After graduating grade 13 from Gananoque Secondary School, Beverly attended nurses training at Kingston General Hospital, graduating class of 1958. She was very proud of her alma mater and maintained a close friendship with many of her classmates. She cherished attending her many class reunions. Bev was an active nurse who started her career at KGH, followed by the DVA Hospital in London On, the base hospital at CFB Kingston, the Rideau Veteran’s Home in Ottawa, and finally as a VON in the Gananoque area. Beverly met the love of her life, Dan Spencer, at a military-nursing dance in 1956 and they were married September 26, 1959. Throughout her twenties she had four children, Leslee Oliver (Dave), David Spencer, Lynne Goernert (Chris), and Kathryn Clarry (Del), and is a Nana to five grandchildren, Spencer, Morgan and Warren Oliver, Keenan Clarry and Benjamin Goernert. Bev relocated her family across Canada a few times to follow Dan’s military career. They had many military friends and enjoyed several different postings including Germany in the 70’s. Bev and Dan built and enjoyed a cottage on Turcotte Lane for many decades. With a final posting back to Kingston, Dan and Bev purchased a cottage resort which they renovated and operated as Spencer’s Riverfront Cottages for 17 years. Bev had the praises of all of her customers as a caring and attentive owner with impeccably clean cottages. They both thoroughly enjoyed the cottage business lifestyle. After selling the business to their daughter and son-in-law in 1997, they moved to a beautiful waterfront house to enjoy the next 20 years entertaining and travelling. In addition, Bev attended several courses at RMC and earned 5 university credits. Sadly Alzheimer’s/dementia robbed Beverly of her last few years, which she spent in Fairmount Home in Glenburnie, ON. Beverly is greatly loved and will be sadly missed. The family would like to gratefully thank the staff at Fairmount for all their excellent care. Those who wish, donations can be made in memory of Beverly to the Fairmount Home recreation/music program. A mass and a celebration of life will be held in St. John the Evangelist Church with date and time to be announced in the near future. Tompkins Funeral Home will update the website as soon as date and times are confirmed.
