Obituary
Philpott, Beverly Joan
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Beverly Joan Philpott (née Rudd) at the age of 90, on November 17, 2024, after a brief illness. Joan passed away peacefully at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, surrounded by 14 members of her loving family.
Joan was the loving wife of Norton for more than 65 years and a treasured mother to Kathy Kennedy, Susan Smith (Tim, deceased 2020), Dave (Sylvia Gordon), and Heather. She was the beloved sister of Gerald Rudd (Joey), a cherished grandmother to David, Sean, Missy, and Nate Kennedy, as well as Spencer and Hunter Smith, and a proud great-grandmother to Brandon, Leah, Owen, and Hudson Kennedy. Joan was the devoted and only daughter of Harold and Mary Rudd, and a dear friend to many more.
Born on March 13, 1934, in Ottawa, Ontario, Joan attended Glebe Collegiate High School and pursued her passion for nursing. She interned and worked at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal during the late 1950s, where she earned her Registered Nursing degree. While in Montreal, Joan met Norton, and they married in Ottawa on April 4, 1959. They soon started a family and moved to Dorval, Quebec, where they lived until 1973 before settling in Oakville, Ontario, where Joan would reside for the remainder of her life.
In Oakville, Joan raised her four children while pursuing further education at Sheridan College, earning a college certificate. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Notre Dame Academy in Waterdown and later at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. A dedicated volunteer, Joan raised funds for the MS Society for many years, and generously gave her time to support others.
Joan’s interests and passions were as vibrant as her personality. She played tennis until the age of 79, delighting in the French Open and Wimbledon, particularly cheering for her favorite players, Federer and especially Nadal. Although she lived in Maple Leaf country, Joan remained loyal to her “hometown” team, the Ottawa Senators. Joan also loved traveling, including memorable trips to South Africa with her young family, enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading, playing cards, and light hearted politics. She found joy in spending winters with Norton and many Oakville friends in Florida, napping at the cottage on Mississippi Lake, and most of all – celebrating the milestones of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Joan will be remembered as an exceptional giver of her time, always ready to listen, support, encourage, and comfort. Her patience and unconditional love made her a safe and trusted confidante for her family and friends. Joan’s kind and selfless nature touched the lives of all who knew her, leaving a legacy of love and generosity.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the wonderful ICU nurses and doctors at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion. Also for the care of Dr. Doug Milloy, Joan’s longtime doctor of more than 30 years.
Visitation will be held at Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, Oakville, on Sunday, November 24, 2024, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The funeral service will take place on Monday, November 25, 2024, at 11 am. There is parking in the rear of the building.
