Betty Vogelaar Obituary
Betty (Gysberta van’t Land) Vogelaar
March 17, 1934 – June 2, 2024
Betty (Gysberta) Vogelaar was called to glory on June 2, 2024, having spent her last day surrounded by family. She passed peacefully with her husband and daughter at her side, knowing that she was going home to be with our Lord.
Betty was born in Epe, Netherlands to Cornelis and Aaltje van’t Land, the eldest of six children. She grew up in a Christian home, attended Christian schools, and enjoyed childhood activities like biking, Girl Guides, and church girls’ club. Schooling and activities were often limited by the war, since the Netherlands was an occupied country in WWII.
Betty immigrated to Iron Springs, Alberta in 1950 with her family. She worked various jobs as farm labourer in the beet fields, housekeeper, maid, and nanny. Betty met Len in 1952, and they married Nov 18, 1955. Their first child (Calvin), who died shortly after birth, was followed by three more, Judith, Andre, and Carole, and one unofficially adopted daughter, Joshie Katherine Tan, who came to them as a foreign exchange student in 1997.
Betty and Len began married life in Iron Springs. They moved to the farm near Pincher Creek in 1959, and lived and worked there with Len’s parents and brothers until they moved to town in 1989, then to Whispering Winds in 2019, and Vista Village in 2023.
Betty was always busy, but also took time for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, (she crocheted beautiful afghans for each little one), her beautiful gardens, Bible studies, church organist, visits to the sick and elderly (she did Meals on Wheels for 13 years), trips to sea shores and distant places. Her interests always centered on people and relationships, and her faith, which never wavered. She was a member of the Christian Reformed Church all her life, and lived out her Christian faith daily in her devotional life, generosity, and warm hospitality.
Betty was predeceased by their son, Calvin Vogelaar; sisters, Wilma Sandstra (Mike), and Janny De Jong (Durk).
She will be dearly missed by her husband, Len Vogelaar, children Judith Welke (Allan), Andre Vogelaar (Michele), Carole Cooley (Kelly), and Joshie Katherine Tan (Jacob), grandchildren Erin Welke-Martens (Matt Martens), James Welke (Joy), Catherine Manocha (Paras), Marieka Welke, Tyree Parkin, Kyra Parkin, Krysten MacEachern (Coady), Calvin Cooley, Benjamin Cooley, Solomon Cooley, Adrijanna Cooley, Alex Pironaggi, Sam Pironaggi, Godoliva Tan, Maxwell Tan, great grandchildren, Ian Martens, Graeme Martens, Britta Martens, Lore Welke, Isla MacEachern, Evelyn MacEachern, Alice MacEachern, Claira MacEachern, sister Hennie Korver (Gordon), brothers John van’t Land (Tina), Hans van’t Land (Rita), as well as many in her extended family, in her church family, and friends in her community circles.
