The Tancek family, Jim and Lori, is sad to inform the world that our Wife, Mom, Mother-in-Law, Grandmother, Sister, Friend and Inspiration, Bernice Gail Elaine Tancek, passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at 9:10 a.m. in KGH-ICU.
It was a beautiful summer morning for her to take her last trip home to be with her Mom and Dad, Edith and Frank Brilz (predeceased 1980 and 1981) and in-laws, Lorena and Edwin Tancek (predeceased 2012 and 2018).
Our girl was born in Medicine Hat, AB on a Monday morning, January 17, 1955.
She was the youngest of 3 children with big sister Marie Anne Bouchard (Brilz-1942) and Husband Frank, and Big Brother Donald Francis Brilz (1947) and Wife Diane. Both families are left to mourn her passing in Calgary, AB and Dunedin, FL.
The family picked up and moved to Calgary in summer of 1961 and took up residence there.
She graduated with honours from St Francis High School in 1972 and moved on to attend the University of Calgary.
She was working at Zellers in NE Calgary when a chance meeting with a young James (Jim) Tancek changed two lives forever.
They seemed to mesh instantly and enjoyed dating and being in one another’s company. This went on for a couple of years until work availability made it necessary for Jim to move to another city.
The 2 young lovers went their separate ways, Jim back home to Kelowna and Bernice staying in Calgary to work.
That was until our girl showed up on Jim’s doorstep one afternoon in Kelowna to rejoin him and on January 29,1977 the 2 were married at St Pius X Church in Kelowna.
The happy couple took up residence in Kelowna with Bernice working at Capri Insurance and Jim at Western Star Trucks.
In June 1983, the couple moved to Calgary for what turned out to be 11 years, both working in their fields of expertise.
During that time, she went into the Insurance game and eventually owned 2 successful insurance agencies in Calgary.
On April 11, 1984, the most beautiful baby girl ever to come into the world greeted the prairie morning sun and Edith Lorena (Lori) Tancek was born. She was named after her two grandmothers.
Time went by and in May 1994, after some careful thought, the couple with daughter in tow, moved back to Kelowna to be closer to Jim’s parents (Bernice’s idea). They bought a condo in Rutland where they reside to this day.
She continued her career in insurance and eventually ended up as an agent at BCAA where her customers loved her. She would retire from BCAA in 2002
Jim went on to become well known for his work at Jacobsen Pontiac/Bannister Cadillac in the Service department.
Lori later went on to complete her degree at Okanagan College where she met Jeff Mitchell. The 2 would wed June 12, 2009.
Bernice ADORED her grandchildren.
On January 1, 2009, our first Grandchild, Linden Anthony Mitchell came into the world. He was the first baby born in the valley for that year. 3 years later, Peyton Gail Mitchell joined the clan March 8, 2012, both at KGH.
Within the last 12 years, Jim’s parents (Lorena and Edwin) passed away. Those losses impacted Bernice hard as they were the reason for the big move to Kelowna.
20 years ago, Bernice was diagnosed with Mitochondrial Myopathy, a genetic form of muscular dystrophy. There are no known cures and limited treatments for this condition.
It would progress to where she would need a wheelchair for mobility.
But the couple made the best of it, traveling to Las Vegas, Mexico, Hawaii, New York and other locales to have new adventures together.
Their favorite times were spent in Las Vegas playing BINGO and Poker at South Point Resort. She often came away as a BIG winner.
She lived as good a life as she could, being grateful for the time she had left after her diagnosis. She did not let that restrict her movements and ambitions. In the end she was ready to go home to see her Mom and Dad. She passed away peacefully in her sleep.
Bernice is also sadly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and long time friends; Toby Brilz, Charmaine Inkster (Brad), Chad Bouchard, Amber (Brilz) Hoyeck (JP), Tyson Brilz (Krysta), Ryan Brilz (Sara), Cathy Hanson (Cornell), Christina Cherban, Pamela Frink (Cherban), Randy Unrau (Delia), Sheena Harvey (Wilson), Ryan Percy (Silvia), Sonya Cary (Anton), Donna Till (Allan).
She also LOVED her two 7-year-old Shih Tzu /American Eskimo puppies, CoCo Chanel and Charlotte Louise, who we got at 10 weeks old. They kept her company during the day and were a constant source of joy for her.
There are a host of other friends, relatives, work colleagues too numerous to mention in this writing.
Please know that she LOVED you all.
The outpouring of sympathy and condolences has been tremendous. All who knew her have the highest of praise for our girl because of her kind nature and “Get it Done” attitude.
Finally, Jim and Lori would like to THANK the caring nurses and doctors at KGH and Cottonwoods Care Center who helped her through the years and made her passing as easy as they could. We especially THANK Retired Dr. MacAulay when, in her first stay in ICU 5 years ago, brought her back from the brink and allowed us to have 5 more years with her. We have nothing but praise for their professionalism and care techniques. She had a better life because of YOU folks at KGH.
We also would like to THANK Dr. Isador Segers and Jackie at Spall Medical Clinic for keeping Bernice alive and comfortable and never giving up on her for all those years since her original diagnosis.
