Jerome Sullivan
(1949-2024)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of (Bernard)
Jerome Sullivan of Antigonish, who died peacefully at home surrounded
by family and much love. He had lived with the debilitating effects of
polymyositis and scleroderma for over a decade. During his illness, he
demonstrated remarkable strength, courage and resilience. Jerome is
predeceased by parents John Angus and Annie Margaret (Gillis)
Sullivan, and a brother John Joseph. He is survived by siblings Hugh
(Imelda), Margaret, Sharon, June (David Barkhouse) and Ron
(Christine). He also leaves behind adoring nieces and nephews, Duane,
Sheryl, Christopher, Rodney, Krista, Amy, Debra, Darren, Aidan, Tommy
and Ewan, along with twenty grandnieces and nephews who will forever
hold him dear to their hearts. Jerome spent his very early years in
Giant’s Lake, Guysborough Co. and most of his formative
years in Upper South River («The River»), Ant. Co., the site
of countless family gatherings and laughs over the years. A proud
Xaverian, Jerome parlayed his passion for English literature into a
very rewarding career as a teacher at Judique Creignish Consolidated
HS and later at Dalbrae Academy in Mabou. Jerome embraced his beloved
community of Judique (and vice versa), where he formed countless
life-long friendships with colleagues, students and their families.
His lasting impact on so many people was most evident in the recent
outpouring of affection and support at his 75th
birthday celebration in Judique. As he liked to note, teaching is a
«late harvest» profession. His love of Cape Breton, Celtic
music and culture may have been surpassed only by his love of lobsters
and scallops (and good food, generally, despite his own dearth of
culinary skills). He appreciated fine cars, especially his Camaro Z28
and Trans AM, along with quality music of many genres, from Sixties
classics to John Prine. Jerome also greatly enjoyed good comedy, from
George Carlin to Ron James, John Cleese to Danny Bhoy. He was also an
avid baseball and hockey fan, especially appreciating the impact of
the highly skilled Europeans on the game. Jerome was an endearing
paradox of frugality and profound generosity. He never missed a family
birthday or failed to help anyone, regardless of the nature of their
need. Jerome was an incredibly wise and compassionate «old
soul», who cared deeply for others, while always inserting some
of his keen and wry humour, often with the help of a Shakespeare
quote. «Uncle Jerome» will be sadly missed as a steadfast
presence in our lives, forever remembered and always with us.
«Good night, sweet prince». And to quote another of his
favourites, W.B. Yeats, «Being Irish, he had an abiding sense of
tragedy, which sustained him through temporary periods of
joy».
We would like
to thank Drs. Michele Murphy and Trudy Taylor, Maggie Gillis N.P. and
the St. Martha’s Palliative Care Team for their
compassionate care. Donations may be made in Jerome’s name
to the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre, 5471, NS Trunk#19, Judique,
NS B0E 1P0 or Scleroderma Canada. There will be no visitation. Funeral
service is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 22 at 11:00 at Saint Ninian
Cathedral with Rev. Danny MacLennan officiating. Funeral under the
direction of C.L. Curry Funeral Home. Antigonish
