Benjamin (Ben) George Duncan, April 24, 1938 – June 4, 2024
Ben passed away peacefully at Chinook Hospice in Calgary June 4, 2024. Ben was born at home on the family farm in Blenheim Twp, Oxford County Ontario to parents George and Ruth Duncan, Ben was the 7th of 8 children.
Ben was pre-deceased by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth Isabelle Louise (Louise) Duncan, nee Lawrence, on February 13, 2013, and also by his four sisters, Blanche Milton, Lorene Stott, Elsie Aspden and Eva Hofstetter and two brothers William and James and brother-in-law Austin Lawrence
Ben is survived by son Troy, his wife Lori (Calgary), their daughter Emily (Winnipeg), son Trevor (Vancouver). He is survived by his daughter Heidi Schlender (Airdrie), her husband Kevin and their daughter Kylie (Airdrie). Ben is also survived by his older brother Donald Duncan of Drumbo, Ontario and 1 brother-in-law Roy Milton of Princeton, Ontario and 1 sister-in-law, Beverley Lawrence of Campbell River, BC. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their extended families on both his side of the family and Louise’s. Ben is also survived by his companion and dance partner Eileen Proud of Calgary.
Ben left high school before graduating but that didn’t stop him or slow him down. He held several jobs over the years even while owning several businesses. He owned a service station, a school bus transportation company (Trillium Bus Limited) in Drumbo, Ontario. In the spring of 1978, he and Louise and the kids moved out to Didsbury Alberta. In Alberta, he owned a school bus sales company in Didsbury, while at the same time selling GM automobiles for H&R Pontiac/Buick/GMC in Olds, Alberta. He owned a John Deere dealership in Warner Alberta in the late eighties. His last business was a supplier of Belzona coatings and linings, and he was in this business from 1989 until his passing.
Dad was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, great uncle, great great uncle and role model. His gentle manner always put people at ease, and he always made conversation interesting with his life experiences. Camping, cards, music and dancing were a few of his favorite pastimes.
If you met Ben, you made a friend, it was that simple. That’s how he lived his life.
