Fredda died suddenly in Montreal on Monday, February 19, 2024. Beloved daughter of the late Zachar and the late Mania Finkelstein. She leaves behind her daughter Elissa Aknay, her shvester Brenda Orchover, niece Jessica Schmiedchen (Peter), nephew Matthew Orchover, and great-nephews Charlie and Remy.
She was blessed to have some very longtime friendships. Childhood friends Alyne, Sharon, Helen, Marian. Friendships for 30+ years Linda, George. In her last decade bonding with her apartment complex neighbours, Donna, Harriet, and Sara.
Fredda grew up in Montreal and spent some childhood summers in Atlantic City. She hated high school and was just there for the social experience. She would frequently skip class and would forge the signature of her friend’s mother to get out of class together. After high school and cegep she lived in Israel for a while, and often recounted her favourite memories of working on a kibbutz. When she returned to Montreal she worked for some time in insurance, and then real estate. Fredda enjoyed selling real estate for about a second but continued with it for a couple of decades. When her father fell ill, she stopped working to become his primary caregiver before he moved into a nursing home. She then spent four to five hours with him there daily for the next three years until he died. A few months after his death Fredda had a health scare of her own which led to a four-month hospital and rehab stay, which largely kept her homebound for the next decade.
While she was taken from us far too early, Fredda had a fantastic last year of life. Doing exactly everything she told her daughter never to do, she met a man online and 2 months later, having gotten a passport for the first time in her whole life, she took off to the US to essentially meet a stranger. Fredda spent most of the last year with Ron (in Virginia, where she often reported «the weather is so much better»), and they went on vacations and ate a lot of Chinese food and sushi.
She loved talking to people and hearing their stories. She would always joke that she «should’ve been a therapist» because people would tell her everything (sometimes things she wished she could have unheard). Most of all she loved to make people laugh. Fredda was always quick with a joke that would leave people in stitches. Fredda could talk for hours on the phone about nothing and in the most incredible detail. She embraced social media and loved to connect with people all over the world in Jewish groups and foodie groups.
Fredda loved Hallmark movies (for all their fake crises and happy endings) and game shows (she had very strong opinions on Alex Trebek’s Jeopardy replacement). Fredda’s strongest opinions were on food – she loved to cook and bake, and when tasting other people’s food, she would frequently dip her head to one side, and say «mmph, mine is better.»
Every day Fredda woke up and read the obituary announcements (she would joke «to make sure I’m not in them»). Hopefully this one would meet her expectations.
Fredda was an animal lover, she often spoke about the cats she had as a youth, many of them named «Princess». Donations may be made in her memory to Miramichi SPCA, (506) 622-0645.
Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Thursday, February 22 at 11:00 a.m. Burial at the Memorial Park Cemetery, de la Savane. Shiva will be held at her home following the funeral until 7:00 p.m., Friday 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
