The family deeply regrets to report the passing of Basil Francis Lefebvre. Basil was born in the family home in Latchford on September 27, 1942 and passed at the Temiskaming Hospital, New Liskeard on September 23, 2024.
Predeceased by his mother Ruth (nee Heggart), passed 1981 and father George A., passed 1995 and sister Ethel St. Jean, passed 2018 (late Elroy). He leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife Frances (nee Robert), brother George L. (Sharon) and sister Lynn Godden (Rob), sisters-in-law Pauline Robert and Joanne Dufresne (Fred) along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Basil will be well remembered by all who knew him for his fondness for telling jokes and the laughter he shared when telling the jokes. If he really liked the joke, you were likely you hear it again. He will be equally well remembered for his hunting and fishing skills which he was proud to display as well as talk about. He had his own trapping grounds for a number of years, a family tradition that continues with his brother-in-law, Rob. His bush-whacking/snowmobiling skills made him the nemesis of more than one game warden it was reputed during his younger years. His favourite shore fishing site under the Latchford railroad bridge saved a potential accident when he spotted a crack in the bridge steel structure and reported it to ONR. The wildlife and fish can rest easy knowing Basil will no longer be pursuing them.
His working career was quite varied starting in the sawmills of Latchford and he even spent a winter working in the bush camps up Lady Evelyn/Diamond Lake way. He spent a number of seasons with the Ministry of Natural Resources fighting fires from this area almost to the Manitoba border but favoured his time with the MNR where, in the company of Barry Elliot, they supervised a crew of summer students maintaining canoe routes in this area of the northeast. He fondly remembered being paid to paddle a canoe on some of the most scenic lakes, creeks and rivers!
Basil always returned to hard rock mining in the cold seasons and finished his working career as a full time miner. He ventured as far afield as Bissett, Manitoba but focused primarily on the Cobalt Camp with stints in Kirkland Lake, Virginiatown and concluded his career with his good friend and co-worker, Mike Ruddy in Holtyre and Dubreuilville before having to retire with his hearing deteriorating.
Basil left us in much the same way that he spent the latter years of his life, quietly. At his request, there will be no service or celebration so, in his memory, Frances and his family ask that you remember him with a smile and try to recall one of his many jokes. R.I.P. Basil.
Basil’s final care has been entrusted to Buffam Leveille Funerla Home. Memorial donations in his name to Sgt Aubrey Cosens V.C. Br. 629, Royal Canadian Legion, Latchford or to the Cobalt, Coleman and Latchford Food Bank would be appreciated by the family. Condolences and tributes can be left at www.buffamleveille.com
