Obituary of Barry Peter Racine
It is with deep sadness that the Racine family announces the passing of their loving husband, father, and grandfather, Barry Racine. In his 86th year, surrounded by his loving family he left this earth peacefully on May 4, 2023, after a brief illness.
Barry was born in Otter Lake, Quebec to Peter Racine and Lola Quaile on February 13, 1937. He spent part of his childhood growing up in Rouyn Noranda with his siblings Billy, Kenny, and Marilyn, before returning to Otter Lake as a teenager, where he would spend most of his life.
On August 8, 1964, he married Maureen Lafleur, the woman he would spend the rest of his life with, his best friend and hunting and fishing partner. Together they enjoyed travelling, snowmobiling, camping, and spending time at their cottage on Trout Lake.
In 1968 they welcomed their daughter Joy into the world, and she grew up to be daddy’s little girl. Hunting and fishing with him and playing horseshoes at the cottage. He was her hero and sage advisor throughout his life. They had one grandchild, Alexandra, who he was extremely proud of, and made sure to tell everyone he spoke to about her accomplishments, especially the fact that she had become a lawyer! Even through his last days in the hospital he was often heard telling nurses about his beautiful granddaughter!
During Barry’s younger days, he worked at the Independent Coal in Otter Lake, he was also a hunting guide and took many trips up the Picanoc Road or flew into remote hunting areas guiding American hunters. He was an avid moose and deer hunter, snowmobiler, and a lob ball player, and later in life took up golf. He began working for Consolidated Bathurst in 1968 and progressed through various positions to eventually become the Captain of Security with Pinkerton’s for the pulp and paper mill, where he worked for 31 years.
In their later years, Barry and Maureen moved to Aylmer to be closer to their family. Barry enjoyed many days by the pool, celebrating birthdays and Christmases with the family, and playing a mean game of euchre! He treasured these special occasions with the ones he loved most. Memories which his family will hold dear to their hearts going forward.
Barry is survived by his loving wife Maureen, his beloved daughter Joy, his son-in-law Pierre, his granddaughter Alexandra (s/o Michael), and his puppy Dolly.
As per his requests, no funeral service will be held, and a small private family gathering will take place at a future date.
Donations to the Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation are always appreciated, as the hospital gave us 24 more years to love this wonderful man.
